2 Blackhawks Prospects Medal At World Junior Championships

Play Free Bird! Team USA has won the Gold Medal at the 2024-25 World Junior Championships for the second year in a row.

This is the first time in the history of the tournament that USA Hockey has won in back-to-back years. This was an overtime victory for the Americans as Nashville Predators prospect Teddy Stiga scored the Golden Goal in overtime.

This means that Chicago Blackhawks first-round pick Oliver Moore has a Gold Medal from this tournament. He played a key role as a depth player on a team loaded with high-end talent.

Moore is an excellent penalty killer, is outstanding in his own end, can chip in offensively, and has elite speed. Without complementary pieces like this, it is hard to win any hockey game let alone an entire tournament filled with great players.

A few of Team USA’s other personnel should be on the radar of the Blackhawks as they enter the next phase of their rebuild. That includes forward James Hagens who was incredible throughout this entire event.

If there was any question about his status as the number one pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, he quieted that noise with his play in Ottawa. As of right now, the Blackhawks would have the best odds of winning the number one pick in the lottery.

Chicago should also be thinking about Team USA head coach David Carle. He was the head coach of the American squad in both of their back-to-back Gold runs.

Carle is also the head coach of the men’s team at the University of Denver where he won the College Hockey National Championship last spring. He has the squad to do it again this year too.

The Blackhawks fired head coach Luke Richardson earlier in the season and replaced him with interim head coach Anders Sorensen. Sorensen has done a good job in certain areas but they might want to go in a different direction with the hiring process when the season is over.

If Carle has any interest in leaving Denver (and the job of coaching Team USA at the World Juniors), he will get heavy interest at the NHL level. The Blackhawks have a young team with more pressure to develop than to win right now.

This USA team was special. 10 players (and Carle) were part of both Gold Medal-winning teams. This hockey country should be proud.

Oliver Moore isn’t the only Blackhawks prospect who is going home with a medal. Jiri Felcman won a Bronze Medal with Team Czechia in their shootout win over a high-end Team Sweden. That is a medal to be proud of as well.

Now, everyone will return to their club teams for the second half of what has been a great 2024-25 season. There is a chance that multiple people from this tournament end up impacting the Chicago Blackhawks in a positive way one day.

For now, this remarkable group of American teenagers can celebrate an amazing accomplishment as they prepare to continue working towards becoming pro hockey players.
