2024 Olympic schedule for Aug. 6: LeBron James, USA in elimination game, USWNT in semis, high-profile medals in track
Medal table | Olympic schedule | Olympic news | How to watch
With swimming and gymnastics over, track, basketball and soccer take center stage on Tuesday.
Elimination play begins in men’s basketball as Team USA seeks a fifth straight gold medal. The USWNT looks to punch its ticket to the gold-medal game. American sprinters will seek gold on the track. And U.S. women look to advance in elimination play in beach volleyball and water polo.
Here’s what we’re looking forward to most on Tuesday in Paris:
Men’s Basketball: USA vs. Brazil in quarterfinal (3:30 p.m. ET on USA)
Men’s basketball elimination games are here with some of the world’s best players competing in Tuesday’s quarterfinal round. Team USA will cap the four-game slate against Brazil as Kevin Durant, LeBron James and Co. look to keep USA’s quest for a fifth consecutive gold medal alive.
Nikola Jokić, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Victor Wembanyama and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander are some of the other stars in action as France takes on Canada, Germany faces Greece and Serbia plays Australia in Tuesday’s other elimination games. Check below for full listings.
Women’s soccer semifinals: USA vs. Germany (noon ET on USA)
The U.S. women’s national team is two wins away from gold in its quest for redemption from a disappointing bronze medal in Tokyo. It has to get past Germany first. The USWNT will take on Germany in the first of two semifinals Tuesday with a trip to the gold-medal game on the line.
The USWNT has already defeated Germany in Paris with a 4-1 victory on July 28 en route to a 3-0 record in pool play. USA then defeated Japan in the quarterfinals to advance to Tuesday’s semifinal round. The winner of Tuesday’s game will face the winner of the other semifinal between Brazil and Spain (3 p.m. ET, E!).
Track medal events featuring women’s 200-meter final (medal event coverage at 2 p.m. ET, NBC)
Five sets of medals will be awarded in track and field on Tuesday capped by a 200-meter women’s final (3:40 p.m. ET) featuring Americans Gabrielle Thomas, Brittany Brown and McKenzie Long, all of whom are contenders for the podium.
Thomas — the bronze medalist in Tokyo — is the favorite. Saint Lucia’s 100-meter gold-medal star Julien Alfred and Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith also project to contend.
Hardware will also be handed out in the women’s hammer throw (2 p.m.), men’s long jump (2:20 ET), men’s 1,500 meters (2:50 ET) and women’s 3,000-meter steeple chase (3:10 ET). DeAnna Price (women’s hammer throw), Annette Echikunwoke (women’s hammer throw) and Cole Hocker (men’s 1,500 meters) are among the other U.S. athletes projected to contend for the podium.
The women’s 400-meter hurdle semifinals (2:07) and men’s 400-meter semifinals (1:35 ET) will also be worth watching.
USA’s Kelly Cheng, Sara Hughes in beach volleyball semis (~4 p.m. ET, NBC/USA/check local listings)
Coming off a dramatic three-set win over Italy in their first elimination match, USA’s Kelly Cheng and Sara Hughes are back in action against Switzerland’s Nina Brunner and Tanja Hüberli. The match will cap a slate of four quarterfinals scheduled for the day and is slated to start around 4 p.m. ET.
Cheng and Hughes — former college teammates at USC — are now 4-0 in Paris in search of their first Olympic medal. They’re going for gold after winning the 2023 World Championship together.
They face a tough path to the semis against two-time European champions Brunner and Hüberli. They’re USA’s last hope for a women’s beach volleyball medal after Kristen Nuss and Taryn Kloth fell upset to Canada’s Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson on Monday.
U.S. women face Hungary in water polo semis (2:35 p.m. ET, streaming/check local listings)
After a 3-1 finish in group play, the U.S. women’s water polo team has advanced to the quarterfinal round. There, it will take on Hungary as it seeks a fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal.
Despite a 13-11 loss to Spain, USA has a dominant goal differential (53-27) and possesses one of the most potent offensive attacks in Paris. Hungary (2-2) will look for the upset with a trip to the semifinals at stake.
