Full list of supermarkets opening across Scotland including Aldi, Lidl and Tesco
SEVEN major supermarkets are set to open a host of new stores across Scotland as part of a huge expansion plan.
A total of 24 new shops are set to open across the country within the next year, creating hundreds of new jobs.
Bosses at Aldi, Asda, Iceland, Lidl, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, and Tesco announced the exciting news today.
And they shared the details of each store’s opening with the Scottish Sun.
Over the next 12 months, Aldi and Lidl be adding an extra 10 stores between them to their growing portfolios.
While Tesco has submitted planning permission for five new stores and Sainsbury’s four.
Morrisons trails behind with three Scottish stores while Iceland and Asda are opening a further one each.
And latest figures from analysts Barbour ABI have revealed that the battle between budget supermarkets Aldi and Lidl and Tesco and
Sainsbury’s for dominance in Scotland is intensifying.
Ed Griffiths, Head of Business and Client Analytics at
Barbour ABI told the Scottish Sun: “These new figures show how competitive the market is and how determined Aldi and Lidl are to keep up the momentum since arriving in Scotland three decades ago
“The picture across the whole of the UK is equally revealing, with Aldi and Lidl accounting for the majority of planned store openings in the next 12 months with 201 sites in development combined.”

Aldi
- Aldi Food Store on Oakwell Road, Castle Douglas

Asda
- Asda Express and Petrol Station on Megray Farm, Stonehaven Interchange – opening around August 1, 2024
Iceland
- The Food Warehouse at Forge Retail Park, Glasgow – opening around March 1, 2024
Lidl
- Lidl Food Store on Heathery Road, Wishaw – opening around January 1, 2025
- Lidl Food Store at Dunbear Park, Dunbar – opening around October 1, 2024
- Lidl Food Store at Braes Shopping Centre, Glasgow – opening around April 1, 2024
- Lidl Food Store on Whistleberry Road, Blantyre, South Lanarkshire – opening around August 1, 2024

Race for Scotland’s top supermarket
Aldi first opened its doors in Scotland in the town of Bathgate, West Lothian, in 1994.
The same year, Lidl opened its first Scottish store at Kirkcaldy, Fife. Since then, the two have expanded rapidly.
Barbour ABI’s figures show how Aldi and Lidl have become a growing presence in Scotland, with Lidl now having 113 stores across the country while Aldi has 107.
Tesco has 219, Sainsbury’s 99, and Morrisons 142 when including smaller stores.
