Inverness boxer George Stewart has become Celtic and Scottish Featherweight champion as he defeated Andy Tham to win both titles.

The Highland Boxing Academy fighter won by unanimous decision at Ravenscraig in Motherwell on Friday night as he took the 10-round contest 99-90, 98-91, 97-91.

The 21-year-old proved too good on the night for his Cumbernauld opponent as he followed up from winning the Scottish Super Featherweight title in November.

Stewart dropped a few kilos to compete in the featherweight division and was pleased to win his third major title in the space of seven months.

Speaking about his performance, he said: “I feel like that I won every round. I made him fight at my pace and I felt that I put in a controlled performance.

“It is the biggest win of my career so far as this is a bigger title than the one that I won before.”

Stewart has been involved in boxing for 11 years, with his coach and father Bruno Stewart in his corner during his victory on Friday night.

He says it was a special moment for all the family.

Now with the Celtic title in the bag, Stewart says he hopes it will open up more opportunities for him in the future.

“Winning the Celtic title puts me in contention for British and Commonwealth eliminators which is my next ambition.”

Stewart was given a heroes welcome when he attended the Highland Boxing Academy Fire on Ice Show on Saturday night when his fellow club mates were in action at the Inverness Ice Centre.
