Scotland’s ‘best beach’ is ‘tropical paradise’ with white sand and few visitors

Scotland’s best beach has been named by Time Out, and it has been described as a “tropical paradise”.

As we near the end of May and enter the summer months, we can hopefully expect more warm and sunny days ahead. When the temperature rises, there is nothing that Scots love more than heading to the beach and soaking in some sunshine.

Scotland is home to so many peaceful and picturesque beaches that it can be hard to know which one to head to. Thankfully, for those needing some inspiration, Time Out has just named the ’11 most beautiful beaches’ in the country.

Coming in at number one on the travel publication’s list is Luskentyre Sands on the Isle of Harris. The idyllic beach is located on the west coast of the beautiful Outer Hebrides island, near the small settlement of Luskentyre.

Luskentyre Sands is beloved by locals and visitors alike for its white sands and crystal clear water. It is also known for its peaceful atmosphere thanks to its remote location.

Time Out wrote: “It’s a long way to travel but the rewards speak for themselves. A narrow, winding road across the barren, weather-whipped landscape of the Hebridean isle of Harris seems to at some point pass through a portal to a tropical paradise, as the brilliant white sands and blue sea hugging the headland at Luskentyre suddenly emerge, mirage-like, into view.

“Don’t worry about throwing your towel down to claim a spot — even on the loveliest of days you won’t be sharing it with many other visitors.”

Taking a look at travel website Tripadvisor, Luskentyre Sands is very popular amongst visitors. It even has a rare five-out-of-five rating based on 1,136 reviews.

Another shared: “This beach is stunning — miles of white sand to walk & a beautiful sunset to enjoy. We found it such a restful, peaceful, still place to visit.”

Elsewhere, other beaches to be included on Time Out’s list are Coldingham Bay in the Scottish Borders, West Sands in Fife, and Sandwood Bay in Sutherland. For those keen to head to a beach closer to the city, Portobello Beach in Edinburgh was also singled out.
