Dream job on tiny Scottish ‘whisky’ island with live-in accommodation included
An incredible opportunity to live and work on Scotland’s iconic ‘whisky island’ has come up.
The Machrie Hotel and Golf Links on the island of Islay is currently seeking a food and beverage server on a permanent and full-time basis. The position pays £24,960 per year, “plus a share of gratuities”, while on-site accommodation is also provided for a fee of £52.85 per week.
According to the job listing on Indeed, the hotel is “nestled in the dunes of a pristine seven-mile beach”. With sweeping views out across the surrounding golf links and the sea beyond, it looks like the perfect base to explore the spectacular island of Islay.
Best known for its nine distilleries that produce world-famous smoky whiskies, Islay is also one of Scotland’s most beautiful isles. Home to breathtaking rugged scenery and tranquil sandy beaches, it is the ideal destination for those looking to get away from the noise of modern living and start over.
The job itself will involve taking orders from guests, serving food and drink, and ensuring visitors are happy. The successful applicant will also need to maintain cleanliness and adhere to food safety standards.
While previous experience in a similar role is preferred, it is not required. However, strong communication skills, ability to multitask, basic math proficiency, and a willingness to work weekends and holidays are a must.
The listing states that hours of work will vary according to the number of bookings and residents in-house. You will be working 40 hours per week over five days, so there will be plenty of time to get out and explore Islay in your free time.
Meanwhile, other than the spectacular surroundings, benefits of the job include use of the hotel’s acclaimed golf facilities and gym and discounted accommodation for friends and family. Staff meals while on duty are also provided, while a 50 per cent discount at the hotel’s restaurant at other times is also offered.
