Scottish city named among best city breaks in UK beating out London and Belfast

New research has revealed the best city break destinations in the UK and one Scottish spot has beat out London for the number two position.

With just over a week to go until the start of June, people across Scotland and beyond will be thinking about how best to spend the summer months. While there are plenty of picturesque rural areas across the country worth a visit, sometimes nothing beats a bustling city break.

A new study carried out by consumer watchdog Which? saw almost 4,000 members of the public share their thoughts on the top cities across the UK for a quick getaway. Looking at the results, Edinburgh places second ahead of cities such as London and Belfast.

Beaten by only Liverpool in England, the Scottish capital was assigned an overall satisfaction score of 83 per cent. According to the experts, Edinburgh has a cultural sights rating of five out of five and ratings of four out of five for food and drink, shopping, ease of getting around, and value for money.

With a wealth of iconic and historic attractions such as Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, and the Palace of Holyroodhouse, it is easy to see why the city was given full marks for its cultural sights. Meanwhile, it is also famous for its cobblestone streets and Georgian architecture.

On the other hand, the city scored poorly for its parking and crowds — with ratings of one out of five and two out of five respectively. The average price of a hotel was also found to be more expensive than any other city in the top five, at £152.

Elsewhere, Glasgow also appears in the top five with an overall score of 76 per cent. Scotland’s largest city received a four-out-of-five rating for food and drink, accommodation, cultural sights, shopping, crowds, and value for money, while the average price of a hotel was found to be £103.

More information about the study and the full list of the top city break destinations can be found on the Which? website.
