National Theatre of Scotland Presents Three Dynamic Productions at Edinburgh Festivals 2024 – Theatre Weekly

The National Theatre of Scotland is gearing up for an exciting season at the 2024 Edinburgh Festivals, presenting three diverse and captivating shows. With two world premieres and a celebrated play, the lineup promises to offer something for every theatre enthusiast.

First on the bill is June Carter Cash: The Woman, Her Music and Me, a brand-new play written and performed by Charlene Boyd and directed by Cora Bissett. This intimate gig theatre piece, presented in collaboration with Grid Iron, delves into the life of the iconic country music star, June Carter Cash. The show will premiere at Summerhall as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe before touring various Scottish venues, including Banchory, Glasgow, and Dunfermline. The production features live music performed by Harry Ward, Ray Aggs, and Amy Duncan, with set and costume design by Shona Reppe and sound design by Pippa Murphy.

Next, Dear Billy: A Love Letter to the Big Yin returns after a successful tour in 2023. Written and performed by Gary McNair and directed by Joe Douglas, this heartfelt tribute to Billy Connolly celebrates one of Scotland’s most beloved cultural icons. The play will be staged at the Assembly Rooms as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, featuring music by Simon Liddell and Jill O’Sullivan and set design by Claire Halleran. The production invites audiences to share their own stories about Connolly, making each performance a unique and interactive experience.

Rounding out the program is the world premiere of The Fifth Step, a provocative new play by David Ireland. Directed by Finn den Hertog, this intense two-hander stars Jack Lowden and Sean Gilder. The story follows Luka, a newcomer to Alcoholics Anonymous, as he seeks guidance from James, a seasoned member of the program. The play explores themes of redemption and the complexities of personal transformation. The Fifth Step will preview at Dundee Rep Theatre before opening at the Royal Lyceum Theatre as part of the Edinburgh International Festival, with subsequent performances in Glasgow.
