Germany fan camp ‘popular with Scottish supporters’ cancelled due to weather

A fan camp in Germany that was set to be popular with Scotland fans heading over for Euro 2024 has been cancelled due to bad weather.

FanCamp was set to offer accommodation with a garden, a bar and a shared lounge, for fans basing themselves in host city Cologne – which will host Scotland’s second group stage match against Switzerland on June 19.

The campsite was said to be on a headland directly on the river Rhine, centrally located near the Cologne Messe/Deutz long-distance train station, and right next to the public viewing “Tanzbrunnen”.

However, the camp, which bosses said was “particularly popular with Scottish and English football fans”, has been forced to cancel due to heavy rainfall making the water level on the river rise.

As many as 150,000 Scots are expected to make the trip to support the national team as they play in their first major finals overseas since the World Cup in France in 1998.

Organiser Dirk Stoeveken apologised to Scotland fans, but insisted they were left with no option but to cancel after the camp was put “almost completely under water”.

He said: “The camp site is currently almost completely under water and the forecast is that the water level of the Rhine will continue to rise.

“This is having a huge impact on the preparations and unfortunately does not allow for a reliable forecast regarding the timeframe and possible cost development.“

Gregor Timmer, the City of Cologne’s representative for the European Championships: “It is a great pity that we had to make this decision.

“We were all very much looking forward to this offer, which was particularly popular with Scottish and English football fans.

“However, the safety of everyone involved is always our top priority and we take concerns about this very seriously. It was important for us to make a decision as early as possible to allow fans to make alternative arrangements.

“We are also avoiding a financial risk that would otherwise have been borne in full by the City of Cologne.

“Unfortunately, a serious assessment of all these points has left us with no option but to cancel.”
