Scottish Empty Homes Partnership welcomes new national manager

The Scottish Empty Homes Partnership has welcomed Tahmina Nizam as its new national manager.

The partnership is funded by the Scottish Government and hosted by Shelter Scotland with the aim of bringing empty homes back into use as affordable housing where possible.

With 10 years of experience in housing and homelessness, Tahmina’s career saw her progress from frontline roles to her recent post at Fair Way Scotland, a coalition working to end destitution for people outwith current statutory and Home Office support.

Passionate about creating wider systems change for all, particularly the most marginalised, she also established accommodation in new geographical areas for people who would otherwise be in precarious housing or sleeping rough.

Commenting on her new role, Tahmina said: “I am delighted to join the Scottish Empty Homes Partnership at such a critical time in the fight against Scotland’s housing emergency. As the emergency deepens, more and more people find themselves without a safe, permanent home.

“Currently, 10,000 children in Scotland are living in temporary accommodation. With a significant lack of sufficient social housing across the country, the Scottish Empty Homes Partnership’s work to bring existing homes back into use has never been more important.”

Shelter Scotland director Alison Watson said: “We are so pleased to have Tahmina on board, and we look forward to continuing our work of supporting the Partnership and its work across Scotland, to provide the housing Scotland so desperately needs.”
