Scotland’s most beautiful and walkable city named best city break for 2024

May is just about over and June is finally here, which means people all across the country will be getting ready to jet off for their summer holidays.

While a fancy trip abroad is all well and good, there are also limitless options here in and the UK. Sometimes, there is nothing better than a scenic staycation closer to home.

As reported by the Daily Express, the “best UK city break” in the UK for 2024 has been named by CN Traveller as Edinburgh. According to the travel magazine, the “beautiful” Scottish capital has a wealth of things to see and do this summer that makes it perfect for a short getaway.

CN Traveller wrote: “After almost two years of muted activity, it’s heartening to see that the pandemic hasn’t affected Edinburgh’s ability to wow visitors.”

Meanwhile, Edinburgh has also been singled out as among the most beautiful cities across the globe by Travel + Leisure. The American travel publication stated that the city’s breathtaking skyline and historic Edinburgh Castle make it a top staycation destination.

Edinburgh is famous for its moody atmosphere and misty weather, which give it an almost-otherworldly feeling. However, that does mean that it is not usually thought of as a sunny vacation spot.

Those who are likely to get the most out of a visit to the Scottish capital are history buffs. The city is world-famous for its stunning attractions in its Old Town, while the gorgeous Georgian architecture in its New Town is well worth checking out too.

Aside from the obvious spots such as Edinburgh Castle, those with an interest in Scottish heritage should add a walk in Dean Village to their agenda. This lovely historic area is renowned for its beautifully preserved 19th-century buildings and peace and quiet.

Elsewhere, if you have an interest in medicine, you should consider the Surgeons’ Hall Museum. This unique attraction spotlights Edinburgh’s long medical history, and is home to some truly one-of-a-kind exhibitions.

If you are lucky enough to catch some sun during your visit to Edinburgh, then the extinct volcano Arthur’s Seat is an absolute must. After hiking to the top, you will be treated to incredible views out over the city.

Among the more quiet spots in Edinburgh that you should make time for is the wooded hillside Corstorphine Hill. Corstorphine Hill Tower in particular stands as a memorial to Sir Walter Scott, while also having sweeping views out over the city and surrounding countryside.

Meanwhile, Edinburgh is also a great staycation choice for those who are fond of a bit of hiking. It has even been named as among the UK’s most walkable cities by Workthere, with one in six locals travelling to work on foot.
