What ’90 per cent of Man United fans’ would say about Scott McTominay’s future
Ally McCoist reckons the majority of Manchester United fans would be desperate to keep Scott McTominay at the club.
Scotland hero McTominay, 27, was one of few consistent performers for the Red Devils last season and popped up with some match-winning goals to help keep Erik ten Hag in a job. The midfielder was the subject of interest from West Ham last summer but McCoist insists United won’t be in a rush to sell him ahead of the new campaign.
He told talkSPORT BET: “Scott McTominay has been excellent for club and country this season. He’s reliable. He’s been brilliant for Scotland, some of his goals in the qualifiers were brilliant, he’s been terrific.
“Even for Manchester United, he’s been 7.5 out of 10 every week. And that’s the one thing Man United haven’t had. They’ve had absolutely no consistency in their level of performance from most of their players, but I totally exclude McTominay from that.
“He might not have the skill or vision of somebody like Bruno Fernandes, but if you asked the Man United fans right now who would they want to keep in their squad, I bet you 90 per cent, or even more than that, would say Scott McTominay. And that’s a testament to how well he’s done at the club.”
Meanwhile McCoist is confident Steve Clarke’s side can qualify from their group to reach the Euro 2024 knockout stages. “Scotland are going to qualify from their group in Euro 2024, they’ll qualify from third place. I’m confident of that,” he said. “They’ll get the win that they need to reach the knockout stages.
“They’ll beat either Hungary or Switzerland to qualify. But I’m not sure Scotland will get much further than that unfortunately. But we’ll see how they do. It should be a great tournament.”
