Five things to do in Scotland this week: from Swan Lake to Lulu

If you’re thinking this will be all tutus and tiaras, toss those ideas on the fire this instant. Scottish Ballet has enlisted the talents of the choreographer David Dawson to rework the classic in a way that brings the dancers’ athleticism to the fore. The costumes are stylish, the set design minimal and you can really see the extent to which the performers are pushed to their physical limits. As the principal dancer Roseanna Leney puts it, the art of ballet is “making extremely hard things look elegant”, and this production goes even further than that.
Details Apr 4-6, Theatre Royal, Glasgow; Apr 18-20, His Majesty’s Theatre, Aberdeen; Apr 26-27, Eden Court, Inverness; May 2-4, Festival Theatre, Edinburgh; scottishballet.co.uk

As part of its 35th anniversary, Edinburgh Science Festival will stage 150 events across 30 venues, digging deep into topics such as AI and its impact on creative work, alternative ways of dealing with dead bodies, and the future of transport. There’s also a zeitgeisty Traitors-style session that puts visitors to the ultimate test — can you work out whether a robot is lying to you? Children are very well catered for too: buying a day pass for the City Art Centre is a great start (though there’s much more). Book ahead for workshops, which explore gadgets, blood, slime and dinosaurs.

Catriona Faint as Katherine Hamilton in James V: Katherine

CAPITAL THEATRES

3. James V: Katherine, touring

Katherine Hamilton (played by Catriona Faint) is a respectable married woman whose brother has been executed for preaching ideas forbidden by the Church. In addition to harbouring a secret love, she now finds herself fighting for her life in an Edinburgh courtroom, attended by important figures such as King James V himself. Inspired by real 16th-century events at the start of the Scottish Reformation, this is the latest instalment of Rona Munro’s acclaimed James Plays. Produced by Raw Material and Capital Theatres, it’s directed by Orla O’Loughlin, who brought to life important productions such as Mouthpiece, Enough of Him and What Girls Are Made Of.
Details Apr 10-20, Capital Theatres’ The Studio, Edinburgh; then touring to Glasgow, Aberdeen, Tobermory, Inverness, Dunoon, Dunkeld, St Andrews, Stirling, Peebles and Hawick; rawmaterials.co.uk

4. Champagne for Lulu, touring

Well now. Weeeeeeeeell. Lulu Kennedy-Cairns turned 75 last autumn and, to celebrate, she’s embarking upon a Champagne for Lulu UK tour, kicking off with a couple of warm-up concerts in Glenrothes and Aberdeen. The Lennoxtown singer was only 15 when she released Shout, and, gosh, has she amassed some stories in those six decades, from winning Eurovision to singing a Bond theme, featuring in Absolutely Fabulous and scoring a number one with Take That. You can expect a few juicy anecdotes between songs.

CALUM JAMES GORDON

5. King Creosote, touring

It’s fitting that King Creosote (aka Kenny Anderson from Crail) has called his new tour Any Port in a Storm. Showcasing songs from I Des, King Creosote’s first album in seven years, the tour will call in at a number of coastal towns and islands around Scotland.

The album hums with the kind of tender, kaleidoscopic sounds — laced with something heavier — that remind us why he’s such an important figure in Scottish music. If you want a taster, look up King Creosote — Live at EartH Hackney, above, which has some interesting snippets from his home town on the East Neuk.
