Stats show how many England & Scotland fans will support each other at Euro 2024
A new survey from Betfair has revealed that 35% of Scots will cheer on England as well as their own nation at Euro 2024 – but 65% of Scots will refuse to cheer on their Auld Enemy
New research has revealed that a surprising 35% of Scots will be cheering for England their Auld Enemy at the Euros as well as their own team.
A recent Betfair survey has shown that 35% of Scots will be rooting for England alongside their own nation at Euro 2024 this summer. However, a majority of 65% of Scots refuse to support another nation – particularly their arch-rivals – and will solely back Steve Clarke’s men.
In contrast, a significant 61% of English football fans will be supporting their Northern neighbours this summer, admitting they will cheer Scotland on as well as England at the Euros.
A smaller proportion will focus solely on England (39%), which is a stark difference compared to Scottish fans, reports the Daily Star.
When it comes to tournament expectations, English fans are far more optimistic than Scots this time around. An impressive 25% of English football fans predict their team will reach the final, while just 5% of Scottish fans believe their team could make it there.
A total of 44% of Scots believe they won’t progress past the group stages, with 36% hoping they get to the round of 16. A smaller pool of Scottish fans (11%) think that they’ll make it to the quarter finals, with even fewer (4%) believing that they could make it to the semi-finals.
On the other hand, only 1% of English fans believe they won’t make it past the group stage while 7% fear the exit will come in the last 16.
A strong 30% of English fans will be anticipating a quarter-final drop out, and an even stronger 37% anticipating a heartbreaking semi-final defeat.
A Betfair spokesperson said: “While we make England favourites to win Euro 2024 at 3/1, the same levels of optimism aren’t shared by the majority of football fans, with only 17% backing the Three Lions to go all the way and lift the trophy.
“Those supporters who do think England can go all the way are right to point out the talent in the squad, with most saying this is greatest England team since the 2006 golden generation, hopefully they can go further than that side and bring football home.”
