The birthplace of Celtic Christianity has a haunting 13th-century abbey (£10; historicenvironment.scot) and the graves of Scottish kings including Macbeth. Roughly three miles by two, Iona is a great island to explore by foot, with beaches at its northern tip and wild western flank that wouldn’t look out of place in the Caribbean. Ferries take five minutes from Fionnphort on Mull.
