A former Mississippi police officer who admitted to forcing a man in custody to “lick” his own urine off the floor of his jail cell has been sentenced to one year in federal prison.

Three months after Michael Christian Green, 26, pleaded guilty to one count of acting under color of law to deprive a person of his civil rights, the ex-cop has now been sentenced to 12 months in prison, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Southern District of Mississippi.

His time in prison will be followed by another year of supervised release and fines, CNN reported.

“The City of Pearl, while not the sentencing body on this case, is glad to have this part of our recent history put behind us,” the municipality told the outlet in a statement.

“The actions of Michael Green were reprehensible and inexcusable, and we have been deeply grieved to have been associated with this incident. We hope that this sentencing can help the victim and his family in their healing process, and we’re grateful to our federal partners who helped bring this terrible incident to justice swiftly,” the statement continued.

Green is now scheduled to report to the Federal Bureau of Prisons on July 26, per CNN.

Green’s lawyer, Bradley Alan Oberhousen, did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Saturday.

Green’s actions were previously captured on security footage on Dec. 23 at the holding cell of the Pearl Police Department.

Federal court documents obtained by PEOPLE said that Green responded to a report of a family disturbance at a local Sam’s Club, before arresting and transferring a man to the police department — where he relieved himself in a holding cell after officers ignored his request to use a restroom.

After moving the man into booking, Green ordered him to “go suck it up right now,” per allegations made in court documents by U.S. Attorney Todd W. Geen.

“You see this phone? I will beat your f—— a– with it. You’re fixin’ to go in there, and you’re gonna lick that piss up. Do you understand me,” the officer reportedly instructed the man, the documents said.

He then took out his cell phone to film the ordeal, as he demanded the man “don’t spit it out.” The man then “repeatedly vomited” into a trashcan, the court documents added.

“Green did not have a government interest or law enforcement purpose in ordering B.E. to lick his urine,” the U.S. attorney wrote in the criminal information, arguing that the officer “willfully deprived” the man of his Constitutional right “not to be deprived of liberty without due process of law, which includes the right of a pre-trial detainee to be free from conditions of confinement that amount to punishment.”

Green joined the Pearl Police Department in June 2023 and resigned on Dec. 27 following an internal investigation, city spokeswoman Therese Apel previously told PEOPLE.
