And a big part of that experience is riding aboard the Jacobite Steam Train, often referred to as the “Harry Potter Train,” weaving through the epic Highland scenery, transporting passengers into the heart of the mystical landscapes that inspired J.K. Rowling’s beloved series. Here is how you can immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of the Scottish Highlands and, for a few hours, feel like your ticket to the wizarding school has arrived.

Warner Bro. Studio had actually taken the steam engine and carriages from West Coast Railways (the operators of the Jacobite) to shoot the scenes for Harry Potter movies. So, you probably can’t get a more authentic experience of the wizarding world.

Scotland’s Harry Potter train journey

Described as the greatest railway journey in the world, this 84 mile round trip starts near Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain and passes Loch Morar (the deepest freshwater loch in Britain), and river Morar before arriving next to Loch Nevis, the deepest seawater loch in Europe.

The train traverses the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct, an iconic structure that has become synonymous with the wizarding world. You will remember this 21-arch viaduct from the Hogwarts Express bridge scene. If the schedule allows, the train conductor may choose to briefly halt on the viaduct, affording you the opportunity to fully absorb the breathtaking panoramic vista.

When the train stops at Glenfinnan’s station, you can take a break and visit the West Highland Railway Museum in the fixed-up station building. If you ask the train conductor, the steam train might also make a stop at the village of Arisaig. The final destination is Mallaig, a fishing port that also serves as a ferry terminal connecting to Skye and the Small Isles.

Once you reach Mallaig, you have time to go for a walk and soak in the surroundings. There are shops, bars, and restaurants, and you can grab some tasty fish and chips for lunch during the break.

For adults, a return ticket will cost you around £98. For children 16 or under, the cost of the ticket is £64.
