Andy Murray opens up on fitness fight but admits he ‘still can’t move properly’

HURTING ANDY MURRAY hopes time is a healer as he battles to be fit for his Wimbledon opener.

The two-time champ has confessed he still can’t move properly having undergone back surgery to remove a cyst just eight days ago.

But he remains hopeful of recovering well enough to be able to face Tomas Machac on Centre Court on Tuesday.

The 37-year-old practiced at Wimbledon for an hour yesterday afternoon having already hit balls at Roehampton in the morning.

And while he accepts he is taking a risk with his health by doing all he can to play he is prepared to do so given this will be his LAST appearance at SW19.

Asked how he felt following his session, he said: “It was alright, considering.

“Obviously I haven’t done much for the last week…I’m just trying to do what I can, trying to keep progressing each day.

“Whether there’s enough time or not, I don’t know, but I’m trying.

“I need to be able to move properly, which I can’t yet, so let’s see in 48 hours or so.

“I don’t know –  tough to know how it’s going to progress, really.”

Before his op Murray was advised a full recovery could take up to 6-12 weeks.

So he knows he is putting his body on the line by trying to play inside 10 DAYS.

The Scot, who will speak at Wimbledon later this afternoon (Sun 2pm), is expected to make a final decision on whether he will go ahead and face Machac on  Monday.

And should he pull out he could instead end his Wimbledon career playing doubles with brother Jamie later in the week.

He said: “Always when you get surgeries done, generally you get multiple opinions.

“I wasn’t told that it was going to be ten days either, but…

“There’s risks associated with what I’m trying to do and I’m willing to take that to try and play.

“So yeah, we’ll see what happens.”
