Hungary ace who suffered medical emergency against Scotland finds out compo fate

FIFA are set to fork out up to £2 million compensation to Hungary star Barnabas Varga’s club Ferencvaros after his horror Euro 2024 injury against Scotland.

The 29-year-old broke several bones in his face during the final group match in Stuttgart after a collision with Scotland keeper Angus Gunn.

He’s been told he will be out for at least six months and will have to wear a protective mask on his face after surgeons who operated on him described his injury as ‘brutal.’

But his club will be fully compensated by world football‘s governing body, after FIFA recently set up a Club Protection Scheme which compensates clubs if their player is injured on international duty.

Clubs could receive up to £7.5 million if a player is out for a year, but Ferencvaros have been told to expect around £2 million based on the player’s value and salary.

Varga is currently still recovering and this week thanked the Hungarian public for their well wishes.

He said: “When I woke up in the hospital, I was immediately struck with how many people were worried about me and asked how I was.

“Thank you very much for your concern and for the many messages everyone! I will try to thank him and return as soon as possible so that I can help the team again and make the fans happy with as many successes as possible.

“I’m better now, the swelling has also decreased and the stitches will be removed soon, I’ll have to have a mask made, so I’m on the right track. I want to focus all of my energy on recovering as soon as possible.”

Varga, who lay out cold for around six minutes, was visited by club doctor Gergely Panics in the aftermath of the incident who revealed the extent of his injuries.

Speaking to Hungarian news outlet Magyar Nemzet, Panics said: “Barni suffered a concussion during the collision and lost consciousness.

“By the time he reached the ambulance, he had already regained consciousness, after which he was taken to the clinic in Stuttgart, where, after the examination, a therapeutic plan was drawn up, according to which he would be operated on. 

“Our striker suffered multiple facial skull fractures, several smaller and larger bones were broken in his face, and some were even dislocated.

“After the operation, he will be kept in for two days. If everything goes well, he will be released on Wednesday.”
