Scotland issued ‘danger to life’ rain warning as Met Office predicts flooding
Scots in the northeast should brace themselves for more wet weather, as the part of the country is set to be lashed with nearly 24 hours of rain.
A yellow weather warning for rain has been issued for this week in Scotland, anticipating 50 to 90mm (two to 3.5 inches) to build across Grampians and North Highlands. More wider parts can expect to see between a lesser 20 and 30mm over the warning period.
The latest alert, issued by the Met Office, is in place for Tuesday, July 9 at 10pm until midnight on Wednesday, July 10. It covers Angus, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray and Highlands – with residents advised to brace for “danger to life” flooding.
This is due to the expectance of potential fast flowing or deep floodwater caused by the high volume of rain within a short time frame. Homeowners are advised to check if their properties are at risk of flooding and to prepare a flood plan and emergency kit if so.
Some communities in affected areas could be cut off by flooded roads, with road spray likely to cause difficult driving conditions. The influx of rain may also result in some power cuts, while delays to public bus and train timetables also likely – so planning journeys ahead of time is recommended.
Looking to today (July 8), a mix of sunny spells and showers are set to continue, with wet conditions set to end by this evening to welcome clear spells. Temperatures through the week are to remain average, with warmth felt where sunshine appears.
The national forecaster’s long range report commencing from Friday, July 12 until Sunday, July 21, predicts this time to start off as “dry and pleasant” with most of the UK experiencing “light winds” and sunshine. However as this period goes on, northwestern areas will likely “see more in the way of cloud and rain”.
With Scotland’s mixed bag of summer conditions continuing, separate forecasters anticipate things heating up once more by this weekend. According to James Madden of Exacta Weather, Scots can expect “summer sunshine” to return by Thursday (June 11).
In his latest forecast published on Monday (July 8), the meteorologist said: “From in and around Thursday/Friday (11–12 July) and into next weekend, we will see high pressure becoming more influential on our overall weather pattern, and this will see conditions turning much warmer than of late over several days and will also bring potentially humid feeling conditions for many.
“These temperatures could easily reach as high as the mid to high 20s in some places and 20C or higher in some other parts further north to begin with during this period in the best of the summer sunshine due to its strength at this time of year (something not showing elsewhere for the majority of last week).
“There are some current questions about a possible interruption to this pattern after next weekend from the main third-party computer models, but I really don’t trust these projections, and even if it did occur, it would only be for a day or so and doesn’t seem that important of a feature.”
