Scotland ‘could have cheapest energy in Europe’ if Labour single energy market

Scotland would have the cheapest electricity in Europe if Labour backs a campaign to break up Britain’s single energy market, according to a power industry leader.

Greg Jackson, the chief executive of Octopus Energy, has called for the introduction of a system that would mean the UK regions and nations with the most low-cost renewables paying lower bills.

His remarks, on the BBC1 Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme, come years after Scottish campaigners said market reforms could slash prices north of the border.

Jackson said: “If we had regional pricing in the UK for electricity, every region would be cheaper than it is now. Scotland would have the cheapest electricity in Europe.”
