Extreme H has debuted its hydrogen-powered race car in Scotland ahead of its upcoming motorsport series starting next year.

The Pioneer 25 was tested publicly for the first time during Extreme E’s 2024 Hydro X Prix taking place in Dumfries and Galloway, driven by Extreme H development driver, Hedda Hosås.

The vehicle, designed and manufactured by Spark Racing Technology and powered by a Symbio fuel cell, boasts an output of 400kW and can reach 0-100kph in 4.5 seconds. It was first unveiled at London’s Tower Bridge last month (June).

The Extreme H championship will begin in April 2025, featuring only hydrogen-powered motorsport vehicles.

Pioneer 25 underwent an intensive testing programme ahead of its debut, according to Mark Grain, Technical Director at Extreme H.

“Extreme H represents the first ever testbed of hydrogen technology in motorsport, not just in our racing cars, but also in transportation, infrastructure, refuelling processes and safety regulations,” he said.

“The Pioneer 25 is more than just a racing car; it is a symbol of our commitment to advancing hydrogen technology and sustainability in motorsport.”

Last year (2023), it was announced that MissionH24 would make an entrance into hydrogen-powered competitive racing. The company was set up by ACO and GreenGT to promote hydrogen in racing.
