Royal news live: Prince Harry suffers Invictus blow as it emerges Trump gunman researched royal family member

Prince Harry has suffered a fresh Invictus Games blow in the wake of the Pat Tillman Award controversy after the foundation’s chief executive announced his departure.

Dominic Reid, who has been credited with helping the foundation’s growth globally, stepped down from Invictus after 10 years and six games across three continents.

The Duke of Sussex, 39, subsequently paid tribute to Mr Reid, who has occupied the role since the games began in 2014.

Harry said in a statement: “His tireless efforts over the past decade have supported thousands of wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans through sports rehabilitation.”

Meanwhile, the gunman who tried to kill Donald Trump searched online for a member of the Royal family days before his attempt on the former president’s life, FBI investigators have said.

Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, was killed after opening fire on the former president on Saturday at a rally in Pennsylvania.

His electronic devices were subsequently seized and revealed that he had Google searched several public figures leading up to the incident, including Christopher Wray, the FBI director.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle labelled ‘the uninvitables’

Saturday 20 July 2024 06:00 , Emma Guinness

A source close to the royals has claimed that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been labelled as “the uninvitables” because of their strained relationship with the family.

“Harry and Meghan are being left off guest lists for friend’s weddings and other events due to their estrangement from the royal family,” the insider said, as reported by the Express.

“There is genuine fear that if the Sussexes are invited to a wedding or a christening, it could leave that family excluded from the social circuit which would be one of the biggest faux pas imaginable.

It is not known when Meghan Markle last saw the royal family, but Prince Harry has not seen King Charles since the announcement of his cancer diagnosis in February.

While he has been in the UK since then, the monarch did not meet with his youngest son, citing his busy schedule.

Friday 19 July 2024 08:39 , Emma Guinness

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle branded ‘tone deaf’ by expert

Friday 19 July 2024 06:00 , Emma Guinness

A royal expert has branded the Duke and Duchess of Sussex “tone deaf” following reports that they could not understand the intense backlash that followed Prince Harry’s receipt of an award for veterans.

The revelation was made by Vanity Fair’s royal correspondent Katie Nicholl on Kinsey Schofield’s Heirs and Spares programme.

“I think they probably are so immersed in their own narrative that they find it quite hard to understand why people take a pop at them,” she said.

“They probably find it so hard to understand why they are so divisive. I do think that sometimes they have the tendency to come over as being slightly tone deaf”.

The criticism aimed at Harry over the award was also given by the late Pat Tillman’s mum, Mary, who said she could not understand why the award named after her son was being given to such a “controversial and divisive” individual.

Harry and Meghan’s American ‘fairytale over’

Friday 19 July 2024 00:00 , Emma Guinness

Following the news that just four in ten Americans agreed with the decision to give Prince Harry an American award for veterans, a royal expert has said Harry and Meghan’s “fairytale” in the US is “over”.

Lee Cohen said that people in the US’s fondness for the couple has “significantly cooled” because of their alleged “whining”.

“Harry and Meghan just love to complain. And in America’s largely optimistic society, that is a bad look,” he told the US Sun.

“While some view the couple’s openness as a brave stance against institutional rigidity, many others perceive it as ungrateful and divisive.

“A segment of Americans, particularly those of us who respect and admire the monarchy, find these repeated criticisms disrespectful and unbecoming. So the Sussexes’ endless narrative of grievance has alienated many who once admired their candour.”

Princess Anne told to ‘rest up’ following hospitalisation

Thursday 18 July 2024 22:00 , Emma Guinness

Doctors have reportedly told Princess Anne to “rest up” over the summer after she was recently hospitalised after being kicked by a horse.

The Princess Royal, 73, suffered a concussion and minor injuries as a result of the incident on her Gloucestershire estate last month.

While she made a surprise return to work last week, medics are reportedly encouraging Anne, who is widely believed to be one of the hardest-working royals, to “rest up” over the summer.

Royal insider Ephraim Hardcastle told the Daily Mail: “A mole reports that medical advice was for the Princess Royal to rest up over the summer, the results of head injuries not always being immediately obvious – but Anne isn’t noted for doing what she’s told.”

Meghan Markle ‘hissed’ at staff while pregnant

Thursday 18 July 2024 18:00 , Emma Guinness

The Duchess of Sussex “turned and hissed” at a member of royal staff while pregnant with Prince Archie, it has been claimed.

The incident took place in Fiji as part of a tour of the island, Tonga, New Zealand and Australia in 2018.

Rebecca English told the Daily Mail: “I was there at the time and witnessed Meghan turn and ‘hiss’ at a member of her entourage, clearly incandescent with rage about something, and demand to leave.

“I later saw that same – female – highly distressed member of staff sitting in an official car, with tears running down her face. Our eyes met and she lowered hers, humiliation etched on her features.”

The Sun reports that the Duchess, now 42, was upset on a trip to a market after she noticed that a group called UN Women was in attendance when she had specifically asked them not to be.

Thomas Markle’s birthday wish goes unanswered

Thursday 18 July 2024 15:00 , Emma Guinness

Today is Meghan Markle’s father’s 80th birthday and his wish to finally meet his grandchildren appears to have gone unanswered.

Thomas, who has been estranged from his daughter since her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry, said ahead of the event that he “knew” his daughter would not be in touch.

“I’ve had a good life and I am proud of what I’ve accomplished, but everything has been overshadowed by what has happened in the last six years,” he told the Daily Mail.

“I’ve never been one for birthdays, but I know the one person I most want to hear from, Meghan, won’t be in touch.”

She was forced to step back from her work earlier this year after being diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer.

“There were two dates she really wanted to make,” the source said, Vanity Fair reports.

“She wanted to be at Trooping to support the King and at Wimbledon because she goes every year, and it brings her great joy.”

According to reports, the Wales family will join King Charles and Queen Camilla at Balmoral early next month.

King Charles’s kindness to Donald Trump ‘appreciated by Americans’

Thursday 18 July 2024 13:00 , Emma Guinness

A PR expert has speculated that the American people will appreciate King Charles privately sending his good wishes to Donald Trump after an assassination attempt last weekend.

While the exact contents of the monarch’s letter were not made public, its existence was announced by Buckingham Palace.

“Americans will see it as a formality and one which they’ll appreciate,” Eric Schiffer, chair of Reputation Management Consultants, told Newsweek.

“Especially if you’re on the right or those who are patriots or who care about lowering the temperature of violence in America, all of which plays to the king.”

Thursday 18 July 2024 12:00 , Emma Guinness

Prince Harry loves Meghan Markle ‘no matter what’

Thursday 18 July 2024 11:00 , Emma Guinness

Following reports that the Duchess of Sussex is feeling the pressure ahead of the launch of her new lifestyle brand, a source has claimed that Prince Harry “isn’t expecting her to create an empire”.

The source described Meghan, 42, as being “on tenterhooks” ahead of the additional release of her new Netflix cooking show.

She and Prince Harry signed a $100 million contract with the streaming platform after stepping down as working royals and there are concerns that it won’t be renewed when it ends next year.

“Harry certainly isn’t expecting her to create an empire, he loves her no matter what and at the end of the day, he just wants her to be happy,” the source told Closer magazine.

Thursday 18 July 2024 10:00 , Emma Guinness

The Duchess of Sussex is allegedly “furious” with King Charles for releasing a new Highgrove product ahead of the official launch of her lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard.

Meghan, 42, has already teased that it will sell products including strawberry and raspberry jam and now the monarch has seemingly competed with his daughter-in-law by releasing the new Highgrove Royal Estate Honey.

“She is trying to establish herself as a lifestyle mogul but now she’s competing with a royal rival,” a source told New Idea magazine.

“She had no idea [about this] and now suddenly, as she sees it, there’s a glut of his products on the market. She’s one step away from calling Charles about the clash but Prince Harry is holding her back.”

Trump shooter researched royal family member, FBI reveals

Thursday 18 July 2024 09:04 , Emma Guinness

The FBI has revealed that the man who attempted to assassinate former president Donald Trump researched a member of the royal family in the days leading up to the incident.

Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, reportedly google searched an unidentified royal on one of his electronic devices.

Other public figures searched on the late Crooks’s devices include Christopher Wray, the FBI director and Merrick Garland, the attorney-general.

He also had photographs of Trump and President Biden and had kept a record of scheduled appearances from Trump and the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

Crooks was killed after opening fire on the former president at Saturday’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Four of ten Americans against Prince Harry’s award

Thursday 18 July 2024 09:00 , Emma Guinness

A new poll has found that just four of ten Americans disagree with ESPN’s decision to give Prince Harry the Pat Tillman Award.

The Duke of Sussex, 39, recently received the honour for his work with the Invictus Games, despite intense backlash over his receipt that saw tens of thousands of people sign a petition against it.

The late Mr Tillman’s mother, Mary, also disagreed with the choice and said she could not understand why the award for veterans was being given to such a “controversial and divisive” individual”.

Now, a new poll by Redfield and Wilton found that only 21 percent of Americans were in favour of Harry receiving the award, while 41 percent said they “didn’t know” how they felt about it.

This left just 38 percent of the 1,500 respondents, who agreed with the decision to give the duke the honour.

The award is reserved for veterans who have made an impact through sport in a similar way to the late Pat Tillman, who gave up his professional football career to serve in the wake of 9/11.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle launch updated website

Thursday 18 July 2024 08:00 , Emma Guinness

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have updated their website this week and notably ended a 64-year royal tradition with their children’s surnames.

They revealed that Prince Archie and Princess Lilbet have taken the surname Sussex, a noted change from the use of Mountbatten-Windsor which was given to the late Queen Elizabeth’s descendants from 1960 onwards.

The children took the surname following King Charles’s coronation in May 2023.

A source told The Times: “The reality behind the new site is very simple – it’s a hub for the work the Sussexes do and it reflects the fact the family have, since the King’s coronation, the same surname for the first time.

“That’s a big deal for any family. It represents their unification and it’s a proud moment.”

Thursday 18 July 2024 00:00 , Emma Guinness

A royal expert has speculated that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could win the favour of the royal family again through their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

This comes after it was claimed that King Charles is “considering” a trip to the US to see his youngest grandchildren.

“If Harry did want a way back in, he could use the excuse that despite his personal beef with King Charles, he wants his children to have a relationship with their grandfather, it would be the perfect way back wouldn’t it?” Kinsey Schofield said, as reported by the Express.
