Real Madrid vs Chelsea LIVE!
Chelsea are heading home from their latest pre-season tour of the USA on the back of another defeat. The Blues slipped to a narrow 2-1 loss against Real Madrid in Charlotte, North Carolina on Tuesday night, with their defensive issues exposed again to create something of a puzzle for new head coach Enzo Maresca that he needs to solve before the Premier League opener against champions Manchester City on August 18.
A combination of Lucas Vazquez and Dani Ceballos gave Real Madrid a scrappy lead at Bank of America Stadium, before man-of-the-match Brahim Diaz doubled the advantage for the Champions League and LaLiga holders. Noni Madueke soon cut the deficit with a back-post header before the break, but ultimately Chelsea could not find that elusive equaliser to prevent a third defeat in five games across the Atlantic following heavy losses at the hands of both City and Celtic, plus a disappointing draw with third-tier Wrexham.
The Blues now host Inter Milan in one final friendly at Stamford Bridge before the serious business begins, while Los Blancos will gear up for the Uefa Super Cup against Atalanta in Warsaw after concluding their own Stateside trip with a first win of the summer. Real Madrid vs Chelsea highlights
Enzo Fernandez set for Chelsea vice-captaincy role despite racism storm
07:43 , Jonathan Gorrie
Enzo Maresca is set to name Enzo Fernandez as one of the vice-captains at Chelsea, despite his involvement in the Argentina racism storm that created a rift in the dressing room.
Fernandez sparked anger among French players in the Chelsea squad when he posted a video of Argentina players singing a racist and homophobic song after their Copa America triumph last month.

A nice morale-booster on which to end a shorter US tour for Real Madrid, who had been beaten by both AC Milan and fierce rivals Barcelona.
They have plenty of big-hitters now to come back into their squad – not least the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham – before next week’s Uefa Super Cup clash with Atalanta in Warsaw.
That game is followed by their LaLiga curtain-raiser away at Real Mallorca.

So Chelsea’s latest pre-season tour of the USA ends with a third defeat in five matches to go along with heavy losses to Manchester City and Celtic and a disappointing draw with third-tier Wrexham.
Their only win came against Mexican outfit Club America in Atlanta last week.
It hasn’t all been doom and gloom for new boss Enzo Maresca, but his side’s obvious defensive vulnerabilities have been shown up plenty on this trip and will need addressing quickly ahead of the Premier League opener against rampant City at Stamford Bridge on August 18.
First up is a home friendly against reigning Serie A champions Inter Milan in west London at the weekend.

49 mins: The early stages of this second half are being played at a rip-roaring tempo.
The ball is quickly zipping from end to end, with openings for both sides.
Here come Chelsea again, though Marc Guiu goes to shoot instead of playing in the open Raheem Sterling to his left.
A poor effort that was never troubling Andriy Lunin.

A lively first half in Charlotte, with Chelsea’s alarming defensive shortcomings ruthlessly exposed again by both Dani Ceballos and Brahim Diaz.

44 mins: Chelsea still look far too vulnerable at the back and are way, way too easy to play through.

Three minutes of added time will be played at the end of this lively first half.

GOAL! Real Madrid 2-1 Chelsea | Noni Madueke 39′
Wednesday 7 August 2024 00:48 , George Flood
39 mins: Now the deficit is halved!
It’s slick build-up play from Chelsea, ending in an enticing Enzo Fernandez cross that is headed home by a leaping Noni Madueke at the back post.
Poor defending from Fran Garcia and Thibaut Courtois totally misjudged the flight of the ball.
Game on in Charlotte.
Real Madrid 2-0 Chelsea
Wednesday 7 August 2024 00:45 , George Flood
36 mins: Chelsea should reduce the deficit!
Raheem Sterling plays a gorgeous one-two with Malo Gusto.
He’s in behind the Madrid backline, but his squared pass into the six-yard box has too much on it for Christopher Nkunku, who is denied a tap-in.
That had to be a goal.
Real Madrid 2-0 Chelsea
Wednesday 7 August 2024 00:43 , George Flood
33 mins: Chelsea started this game pretty sharply, but have gone completely off the boil now.
Filip Jorgensen has to be alert to snuff out the danger again before a sloppy pass inside their own half has Real off to the races once more.
This time Malo Gusto gets back to deal with the danger posed by Brahim Diaz.
Real Madrid 2-0 Chelsea
Wednesday 7 August 2024 00:41
30 mins: Enzo Maresca is very keen to try and impart some wisdom on this struggling Chelsea defence during a cooling break.
He goes straight over to Levi Colwill.
GOAL! Real Madrid 2-0 Chelsea | Brahim Diaz 28′
Wednesday 7 August 2024 00:37 , George Flood
28 mins: It’s two!
Brahim Diaz easily rounds Filip Jorgensen and finishes nicely from a tight angle after a fine pass through from Vinicius Jr.
More defensive woes for Enzo Maresca.
Real Madrid 1-0 Chelsea
Wednesday 7 August 2024 00:37 , George Flood
24 mins: What is Antonio Rudiger doing there?
He tries a silly challenge miles out and Christopher Nkunku charges through, trying to tee up Raheem Sterling.
However, Sterling is edged out by Eder Militao and the danger is averted.
Real Madrid 1-0 Chelsea
Wednesday 7 August 2024 00:35
22 mins: A couple of good saves from Filip Jorgensen, including from Luka Modric, with Real Madrid also whipping an effort off target.
The pressure continues on this Chelsea backline.
GOAL! Real Madrid 1-0 Chelsea | Dani Ceballos 19′
Wednesday 7 August 2024 00:28 , George Flood
19 mins: The reigning Spanish and European champions are in front!
One ball cuts open that suspect Chelsea defence and Madrid are pouring through again.
It’s a very messy goal in the end, with Lucas Vazquez’s shot taking a deflection off Malo Gusto and trickling to the back post, where it’s turned in by former Arsenal loanee Dani Ceballos under pressure from Filip Jorgensen.
Had it already gone in before that touch? It wasn’t immediately clear.
Either way, Chelsea are behind and look awful in defence again.
Real Madrid 0-0 Chelsea
Wednesday 7 August 2024 00:27
17 mins: Chelsea are all over the place at the back at times again here, with Real Madrid creating an overload on the right-hand side of the box before Lucas Vazquez balloons well off target.
Levi Colwill then makes a right hash of things deep inside the area and is fortunate to see Brahim Diaz poke wide.
Real Madrid 0-0 Chelsea
Wednesday 7 August 2024 00:24 , George Flood
14 mins: End-to-end stuff at the moment as Chelsea see a goal-bound shot blocked.
Then Real counter quickly and Vinicius Jr is brought down in the six-yard box by Reece James, who did crucially get a toe on the ball.
Real Madrid 0-0 Chelsea
Wednesday 7 August 2024 00:21 , George Flood
11 mins: Chelsea are suddenly in all sorts of trouble at the back.
Reece James cannot deal with a ball over the top and Real are almost in!
The Blues just about scramble clear, with one shot then blocked before Vinicius Jr fires high and wide.
Not a good start to this game from James.
Real Madrid 0-0 Chelsea
Wednesday 7 August 2024 00:18 , George Flood
8 mins: Chelsea see a dangerous low cross into the box repelled before Antonio Rudiger chops down Noni Madueke with a naughty challenge.
I think that merited a booking, even in a friendly.
Madueke looking nice and sharp for Chelsea so far down that right flank.
Real Madrid 0-0 Chelsea
Wednesday 7 August 2024 00:16 , George Flood
8 mins: A good run from Enzo Fernandez drags the full-back inside and opens up acres of space down the Chelsea left for Raheem Sterling, but he can’t bring in a sprayed pass from Romeo Lavia and Real Madrid can reset.
Real Madrid 0-0 Chelsea
Wednesday 7 August 2024 00:15 , George Flood
5 mins: Poor defending there from Reece James, who is somewhat bailed out by the pace and anticipation of Levi Colwill to thwart Vinicius Jr and earn Chelsea a goal kick.
Real Madrid 0-0 Chelsea
Wednesday 7 August 2024 00:14 , George Flood
4 mins: A positive start to this game from Noni Madueke, who lays the ball back for Christopher Nkunku after a thrusting run from Raheem Sterling, who then gets into the box and heads the Frenchman’s cross well over the bar.
Real Madrid 0-0 Chelsea
Wednesday 7 August 2024 00:12
2 mins: A rather frantic start to the game with possession changing hands quickly in front of an excitable crowd.
Noni Madueke is already a threat for Chelsea down the right, beating his man and floating a cross that Sterling can only thrash into the side netting after getting to the byline.
Thibaut Courtois then looks to quickly release Rodrygo, but the Brazilian fouls Malo Gusto and the chance is lost.

Moises Caicedo IS involved for Chelsea tonight
Tuesday 6 August 2024 23:37 , George Flood
The Sun’s Jack Rosser, previously of the Evening Standard, reports that Moises Caicedo is fit and available to come on for Chelsea tonight despite not being listed on the teamsheet as an official substitute.
Not sure what’s happened there then.
Chelsea tactics
Tuesday 6 August 2024 23:35 , George Flood
It looks like Malo Gusto is playing left-back again for Chelsea tonight, as he did in the 4-2 defeat by Manchester City on Saturday.
But he’ll likely have Raheem Sterling ahead of him tonight instead of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.
Presumably that’s Enzo Fernandez and Romeo Lavia as a deeper midfield pair, with Sterling and Noni Madueke flanking young striker Marc Guiu and Christopher Nkunku playing just behind.
A 4-2-3-1 system on paper, but with plenty of Maresca tweaks and inventions no doubt.
Moises Caicedo absent from Chelsea matchday squad
Tuesday 6 August 2024 23:25
Worth noting that Moises Caicedo is not even on the bench for Chelsea tonight, having returned following a post-Copa America break to play 45 minutes against Manchester City in Ohio at the weekend.
I’m sure Enzo Maresca will be asked about the reason for that absence after tonight’s game.
Blues fans will very much hope it’s not an injury issue for the £115m midfielder.
Filip Jorgensen handed full Chelsea debut as five changes made
Tuesday 6 August 2024 23:13
We do indeed see a full Chelsea debut in goal tonight for Danish Under-21 international Filip Jorgensen, who joined from Villarreal in a £20.7m deal last week and made a quick debut as a substitute in the win over Club America in Atlanta.
He replaces Robert Sanchez, while in central defence another new arrival Tosin Adarabioyo makes way for Benoit Badiashile.
Enzo Fernandez looks to be moving back and partnering Romeo Lavia in the midfield pivot as Moises Caicedo drops out, with Mykhailo Mudryk and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall also moved to the bench as Noni Madueke, Raheem Sterling and Marc Guiu all come in.

Enzo Maresca calls on Premier League to change PSR rules
Tuesday 6 August 2024 22:50 , George Flood
As well as blaming the Premier League’s current financial rules for the impending sale of Conor Gallagher to Atletico Madrid, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca also called for a change to the top-flight’s profit and sustainability regulations that have made so many headlines already this summer.
“If they want to protect academy players, then probably yes,” Maresca said when asked if a change was required.
“Absolutely [I want to promote academy players to the first team and not sell them for profit].
“I also think the intention of the club is not to sell players from the academy, but it is the rules at the end that you have to do it.
“It’s not only us, it’s all the Premier League clubs. It’s a shame because in Italy, we have [Francesco] Totti with Roma, 20 years with the same club.
”One-club-man; we love that in football, the fans want to see that. But with the rules now it is different than the past.”
Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo return to Real Madrid lineup
Tuesday 6 August 2024 22:35
A very early Real Madrid team announcement from Carlo Ancelotti, who makes two changes from the team that lost a ‘friendly’ Clasico to fierce rivals Barcelona in stormy New Jersey on Saturday night.
Both come in attack, where young duo Endrick and Arda Guler make way for Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo, who both made their returns following post-Copa America breaks off the bench at the weekend.
Otherwise it’s a case of as you were from the Champions League and LaLiga holders, with Thiabaut Courtois and Antonio Rudiger starting against their former clubs.
It’s a very youthful bench for Madrid with so many key players still away on holiday.

Enzo Maresca: Premier League rules forcing Conor Gallagher exit
Tuesday 6 August 2024 22:06
The impending sale of Conor Gallagher to Atletico Madrid certainly has not been well received by many Chelsea fans.
However, Blues boss Enzo Maresca insists Premier League sides are being forced to sell such academy graduates in order to satisfy current top-flight financial rules, which sees those sales count as pure profit in the clubs’ accounts.
“This is not Chelsea’s problem, these are the rules,” the Italian said.
“All the clubs at this moment are compelled to sell players from the academy because of the rules.
“It’s all of the Premier League clubs’ problems.”
Chelsea expected to sign Samu Omorodion
Tuesday 6 August 2024 22:00 , George Flood
As ever, there is so much transfer speculation swirling around Chelsea as they prepare for tonight’s high-profile clash with Real Madrid in Charlotte.
While the Blues are in the process of selling England midfielder and popular academy graduate Conor Gallagher to Atletico Madrid, it seems that Samu Omorodion may well move in the opposite direction.
Chelsea are expected to pay a fee of £34.5m for the Spanish Under-21 international striker, with Atleti about to spend big on Manchester City frontman Julian Alvarez.
Omorodion would become the latest arrival of yet another busy summer at Stamford Bridge, joining Filip Jorgensen, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Tosin Adarabioyo, Omari Kellyman, Marc Guiu, Caleb Wiley and Renato Veiga.
Deals have also been secured for exciting South American prospects Aaron Anselmino and Estevao Willian.

Federico Valverde, Dani Carvajal, Ferland Mendy, Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga are also still on holiday after their summer international exploits.
Madrid’s only known injury absentee at present is David Alaba, who is still sidelined with that serious knee injury that saw him miss the European Championship with Austria.

It’s the fifth and final match of the Blues’ eventful pre-season tour of the USA in Charlotte, North Carolina tonight.
