Yankees place Jake Cousins on 15-day IL, recall Clayton Beeter from Triple-A

The Yankees placed right-hander Jake Cousins on the 15-day IL with a right pectoral strain ahead of Sunday afternoon’s series finale against the Oakland Athletics.

Cousins departed alongside Aaron Boone and team trainers after throwing just six pitches during his most recent outing in Thursday night’s 3-2 loss to the Seattle Mariners.

The righty had been dealing with a pec issue over the past few days, and with his velocity significantly down from his season averages, they decided his day was done.

He was initially expected to be sidelined for just a few days, but now the Yanks have decided to place him on the IL, keeping him out for the remainder of the regular season.

Cousins pitched well after being acquired in an offseason deal with the White Sox, posting a 2.37 ERA and 1.05 WHIP while striking out 53 batters across 37 appearances.

In a corresponding roster move, pitching prospect Clayton Beeter has been recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The 25-year-old has just one big-league appearance under his belt, but he’s pitched to a strong 2.08 ERA and 1.02 WHIP while striking out 56 batters in the minors this season.
