Szczęsny comes out of retirement to sign as Ter Stegen replacement
Barcelona have completed the surprise signing of Wojciech Szczęsny as a replacement for the injured Marc-André ter Stegen.
The German goalkeeper ruptured the patellar tendon in his right knee against Villarreal last Sunday, and there are fears he could miss the rest of the season.
As a result, Barça moved for Szczęsny, who has come out of the retirement he announced in August, to join the club on a one-year contract.
The Polish goalkeeper was capped 84 times by his country and played at EURO 2024 before he left Juventus in the summer after seven years in Turin, during which time he made 252 appearances for the club.
He has also previously played for Roma and Arsenal, and represents a vastly experienced option for Hansi Flick in goal.
The 34-year-old stopper will battle Iñaki Peña for the no.1 shirt, with the La Masia graduate stepping in since Ter Stegen’s injury.
