IIHF Set To Celebrate Girls Hockey This Weekend

This weekend the IIHF will celebrate with the 2024 IIHF World Girls’ Hockey Weekend as communities across the world acknowledge women and girls who play the game.

In recent years the event has spread globally with events held in North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia.

Women and girls have been recorded skating since the 1300s, and playing hockey since the late 1800s.

In 2024, the number of nations officially competing in IIHF sanctioned World Championship tournaments for women had climbed to 45.

That number has consistently climbed since the first sanctioned World Championship tournament in 1990 when eight teams competed.

Each year since 2011, the IIHF has hosted a World Girls’ Hockey Weekend. The annual event brings associations from across the globe together to celebrate girls and women in hockey, as well as to host opportunities for youth and adults to try the sport. These events have taken the form of skills sessions and camps, seminars, tournaments, try hockey events, coaching development, and organizational celebrations.

The IIHF’s 2024 World Girls’ Hockey Weekend will take place from October 11-13.
