Husso Forced Into Early Exit in Grand Rapids

Six minutes and nine seconds into the second period of last night’s game between the Grand Rapids Griffins and the Springfield Thunderbirds, Detroit Red Wings opening night starting goaltender was forced to exit the game early. He’d given up one goal on 11 shots, so Husso hadn’t quite replicated the shutout form of his previous AHL outing, but nonetheless his effectiveness did not appear to be the cause for the departure from the game. It’s hard not to wonder whether Husso sustained an injury, but, as of this writing, neither the Griffins nor Red Wings have offered any information suggesting as much. There was also no clear sign of injury during the game. If it was indeed injury, that would obviously be a disheartening development.

After an injury-plagued 2023-24, Husso played his way into the opening night starter’s net during the pre-season. However, he was forced to exit that game early too, though in that case the cause was clear: Husso conceded four goals on 14 shots, several of them clearly goals he’d like back. In part due to roster maximization, Husso was sent down to the Griffins, where he delivered a shutout in his first appearance, perhaps indicating things were back on the right track before this latest apparent roadblock.

The good news for Grand Rapids is that the Griffins were able to turn around the 1-0 deficit after Sebastian Cossa assumed the net, powered by Nate Danielson’s first career professional goal and Gabriel Seger’s first AHL goal.

For now, though, it will be a waiting game to hear more on Husso.
