Are shops and supermarkets open or closed on Easter Sunday and Monday 2024?

It’s Easter weekend, meaning millions of people will enjoy a four-day break thanks to Good Friday and Easter Monday.

As a result shops, stores and supermarkets across the UK will have different opening hours than normal – with many opening and closing later and earlier on the two bank holiday days.

However, laws are in place that limit certain retailers being able to open on Easter Sunday. According to the government small shops – that are up to 280 square metres in size – in England and Wales can open any day or hour. There are no trading hours restrictions in Scotland.

Stores over 280 square metres in size must close on Easter Sunday. This means big retailers such as large supermarkets have to close by law.

Supermarkets with smaller stores that are under 3,000 square foot may open – but with shorter hours than usual. Other non-essential shops, such as clothes stores, are shut until Easter Monday at the earliest in England.

This means while most large Asda, Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, Morrisons and M&S supermarkets will be closed, express and convenience stores will be able to open. It is worth checking your local supermarket’s opening hours to check.

Other stores that will be closed include IKEA, Wickes, Screwfix and B&Q. Retailers such as Primark will be shut as will B&M and Home Bargains.

The Arndale Centre will also be closed on Easter Sunday along with shops inside the Trafford Centre – however restaurants will be open.
