Are shops open on Easter Sunday? A very good question. Depending on your location, the retailer and the size of the store, the answer is different. But don’t worry, we’ve covered the most popular supermarket choices.

Important dates: In 2024, Easter Sunday falls on March 31st, Good Friday is March 29th and Easter Monday is April 1st.

Despite Good Friday and Easter Monday being bank holidays, plenty of shops decide to stay open. However, on Easter Sunday, stores being open depends largely (and legally) on their size.

This is because government rules dictate that stores in England, Wales and Northern Ireland over 280 square metres in size are legally obliged to close on Easter Sunday. Whilst this doesn’t apply to Scotland, some retailers choose to close for the day anyway.

Across the UK, smaller shops can remain open, but again, this is entirely at the store’s discretion, with many choosing to give their staff a break.

If you need to head to the shop on Easter Sunday, check the retailer’s website for opening dates and times. Some shops and supermarkets may be open but with reduced hours and earlier/later opening times.

Is Tesco open on Easter Sunday? Yes, in Scotland, but not in the rest of the UK.

Most Tesco stores will be open on the days around Easter, but close on Easter Sunday. Stores in Scotland will follow a different schedule and will open on Easter Sunday.

Good Friday: 6am to 10pm (times vary based on location)

Saturday: 6am to midnight

Easter Sunday: Closed (Scottish stores are open 8am to 8pm)

Easter Monday: 8am to 6pm (reduced hours vary based on location)

ASDA

Is ASDA open on Easter Sunday? Yes, in Scotland, but not in the rest of the UK.

Asda will operate on a reduced schedule over the Easter weekend. These times vary depending on location, so check with your local store.

Is Sainsbury’s open on Easter Sunday? Yes, in Scotland, but not in the rest of the UK.

Although the opening times may vary depending on whether you’re shopping at a Sainsbury’s Local or a larger Sainsbury’s supermarket, all stores will be closed in England and Wales on Easter Sunday.

Waitrose

Is Waitrose open on Easter Sunday? Yes, but only in some locations, so check with your local outlet.

A handful of key Waitrose locations will actually be open on Easter Sunday. There will also be some variations for Little Waitrose shops.
