Aston Villa: McGinn’s friend shares fitness update v Tottenham
We’re delighted to welcome former Aston Villa full-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Villa Park…
Alan Hutton admits John McGinn looked “tired” when he was substituted off in Scotland’s 3-3 draw with Norway at Hampden Park on Sunday (19 November).
The Aston Villa midfielder has played a lot of football for club and country this season and has been instrumental in Scotland qualifying automatically for the 2024 European Championships in Germany.
He scored his 18th Scotland goal in the draw with Norway, as well as assisting one, at the weekend before being substituted off by Steve Clarke after 79 minutes.
Hutton is a close friend of McGinn’s and although he believes the midfielder was lagging in the final minutes of his appearance against Norway, he’s confident the ex-Hibernian man will recover in time to start when Aston Villa take on Tottenham in North London on Sunday (26 November).
Hutton told Villa News: “I don’t think you rest him. He runs through brick walls and gets on with it.
“I know he looked tired when he came off [against Norway] but he went through a lot. He powers through his work and he’s combative. That’s what he does, he gets into it.
“But he recovers well and he looks after himself. That’s the main thing so from now until the game against Tottenham, that’s what he’ll do. I expect him to be fit and I expect him to play. There could be a curveball in there – you never know. But me knowing John, he’ll be ready.”
McGinn has started all but one of Villa’s 19 matches in all competitions this season, scoring five goals and supplying three assists in the process.
In other Aston Villa news, a Sky Sports pundit feels sorry for this under-the-radar Villans star as he’s left disappointed by what happened.
