Ayrshire Art Deco style train station set for stunning makeover
Girvan Train Station is set for a facelift under new proposals, Ayrshire Live can reveal.
Network Rail has unveiled plans to reintroduce a replacement canopy at the site.
The previous canopy was removed from the building in the summer of 2021 due to safety concerns.
Now an application has been submitted to South Ayrshire Council, seeking Listed Building consent to enable the replacement works to go ahead.
Also involved in the proposals are IDP Architects LLP who revealed that Girvan Station, a Category B listed building, is “notable” for being the “only Art Deco style building in Scotland’s Railway.”
And the overall aim of the planning proposal is to “replicate” the previous structure while “addressing challenges” and “enhancing longevity and functionality” at the station.

In their proposals IDP Architects said: “This proposal aims to reinstate the canopy as close to a like-for-like basis as possible.
“Other design factors to consider are proposing materials that provide enhanced longevity, minimise disruptions to the existing façade, noncombustible, aesthetically pleasing and in keeping with the existing building.”
The architects also say that the new canopy, if approved, will remain “in keeping” with the previous canopy and this will include overall width, depth of fascia with rounded edges, and the elevation from ground level.
They added: “The proposed reinstatement of the canopy aims to preserve the architectural heritage of the station while addressing structural and maintenance concerns. By utilizing modern materials and design techniques, the new canopy will not only replicate the aesthetic appeal but also improve longevity, ensuring continued serviceability for years to come.”
The proposals, which also include making good the brickwork, new render and paintwork, are listed as ‘pending consideration’ on South Ayrshire Council’s online planning portal. A decision on them is expected in August.
