Ayumu Hirano, Maddie Mastro among snowboarders announced for The Snow League

Olympic gold medalist Ayumu Hirano of Japan and two-time U.S. Olympian Maddie Mastro are among snowboarders set for the first season of The Snow League.

The Snow League, the first professional league dedicated entirely to snowboarding and freeskiing, was founded by three-time Olympic gold medalist Shaun White.

The debut event will be March 7-8 at Aspen Snowmass in Colorado, airing live on Peacock. Tickets are on sale at TheSnowLeague.com.

There will be four total events around the world in the first season with further dates and locations to be announced. All will air live on Peacock with encore presentations on NBC.

Hirano, who won Olympic gold in 2022 and silver in 2014 and 2018, was the first halfpipe snowboarder to land a triple cork in competition.

He’s joined in the men’s field by 2021 X Games winner Yuto Totsuka of Japan, plus U.S. Olympians Chase Josey and Lucas Foster.

Mastro, a three-time X Games medalist and two-time world championships medalist, is part of a women’s field that also includes 2022 Olympic silver medalist Queralt Castellet of Spain.

Plus Gaon Choi of South Korea, who in 2023 broke Chloe Kim’s record as the youngest X Games snowboard halfpipe champion at age 14.

Men’s and women’s snowboard halfpipe competitions will be held at each of the four Snow League events. Freeskiing will debut at the league’s second event in late 2025 and in all future events after that. The field of freeskiers will be announced after the Aspen competition.

Athletes accumulate points based on results from each event to crown The Snow League World Champion at the end of the season. Results will also count toward the World Snowboard Points List, which can be used to determine Olympic team selections.

The total prize purse of more than $1.5 million — split equally between women and men — is billed by the league as the richest in both sports.

Many of the world’s top halfpipe snowboarders and skiers compete this week at the Toyota U.S. Grand Prix at Copper Mountain, Colorado, which airs on NBC Sports and Peacock on Saturday and Sunday.
