Bomb squad race to Scots street after ‘suspect item’ found after van fire

The bomb squad were called to a street in East Dunbartonshire after a ‘suspect item’ was discovered following a van fire.

Emergency services raced to Benvue Road in Lennoxtown after the alarm was raised at around 11.20pm on Saturday. Fire crews attended and extinguished the blaze.




Following this an item was discovered with a bomb squad quickly called and homes evacuated in the early hours.

One local said: “Someone blew up a van that sits behind our house. I was woken at 3am by police telling us to evacuate. Bomb disposal were there with robots and an army major.

“Ben Vue road was shut at Meikle Bin Brae with police, ambulance and fire also in attendance.”

It’s understood police are still at the scene and officers say their enquiries are ongoing.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 11.20pm on Saturday, June 8, 2024, police received a report of a van on fire at Benvue Road, Lennoxtown.

“The fire was extinguished and no-one was injured. A suspect item was found at the vehicle and this has been made safe by Explosive Ordnance Disposal.
