20 OLD FIRM SCOTTISH CUP FINAL FACTS

1. This will be their 55th meeting in the Scottish Cup.

2. Celtic are ahead 26 to 19 with the rest drawn.

3. The first-ever meeting in the competition came in a first round tie in 1890 – Celtic won 1-0 at home in front of a sold-out crowd of 16,000 with an estimated 6,000 more fans locked out.

4. The first-ever Scottish Cup Final between the teams came four years later at Cathkin Park where Rangers won 3-1 in front of 17,000 – it was Rangers’ first triumph in the competition.

5. Today will be their 20th meeting in a Scottish Cup Final stretching back 130 years.

6. It’s seven wins each and five draws.

7. The highest Scottish Cup Final attendance between them was in 1963 when 129,643 squeezed into Hampden Park to watch a 1-1 draw. The reply was watched by 120,243 a few days later and Rangers won 3-0.

8. There have twice been major riots when the clubs have met in the Scottish Cup Final. In 1909, the Cup was withdrawn after a replay when the crowd rioted because they assumed extra time would be played after the draw.. Both clubs were fined £150 by the SFA.

9. And in 1980, following Celtic’s 1-0 win, both sets of fans invaded the pitch and fought battles using a variety of missiles. This time, the SFA fine was £20,000 each and the sale of alcohol inside Scottish football grounds has been banned ever since.

10. The biggest win between the clubs in the Scottish Cup happened in 1925 when Celtic romped to a 5-0 semi-final win.

11. Rangers’ biggest win came in the 1928 Scottish Cup Final when they eased to a 4-0 victory.

12. There have twice been eight goals in a Scottish Cup tie. A quarter-final at Parkhead in 1957 finished in a 4-4 draw. And Celtic won the 1892 semi-final 5-3.

13. Surprisingly, there has only even been one hat trick in an Old Firm clash in a Scottish Cup tie and it happened 120 years ago. The first-ever Final at the present-day Hampden Park saw Rangers race into a 2-0 lead before Jimmy Quinn netted three times to win the 1904 Scottish Cup 3-2 for Celtic.

14. Celtic boss Willie Maley is the manager who has been in charge of the most Scottish Cup ties between the Old Firm with 14. He won seven of them.

15. For Rangers, William Wilton has been in charge for the most Scottish Cup ties. Of his 11 Old Firm games in the competition, he won only three of them.

16. Legends Billy McNeill and John Greig have played the most Old Firm Scottish Cup games – the Celtic icon played 12 and the Ibrox hero 11.

17. Top all-time Scottish Cup goalscorer in Old Firm ties is Jimmy Quinn again, with five goals – three of them in that 1904 Scottish Cup Final. Rangers have five players who have scored three times against the Hoops in the competition – Jimmy Millar, Finlay Speedie, Ally McCoist, Davie Wilson and Ralph Brand.

18. Celtic have only ever had one player sent off against Rangers in any Scottish Cup tie – Fraser Forster was shown a red card in a 2011 fifth round tie at Ibrox that ended in a 2-2 draw.

19. But Rangers have remarkably seen TEN players sent off in Old Firm Scottish Cup ties going back to Alex MacDonald in 1970 third round tie. Mark Hateley, Mark Walters, Terry Hurlock, David Robertson, Steven Naismith, Steven Whittaker, Madjid Bougherra, El Hadji Diouf and Ross McCrorie have all seen red.

20. All time Scottish Cup goals between the teams are: Celtic 83-67 Rangers.
