Cyclist Sam wins Scottish title

Lochfoot cyclist Sam Barbour was on top form at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow at the weekend, winning three medals in three events.

Starting with an individual pursuit of 3km, the 18-year-old achieved a new personal best and was able to finish second.

The next event was a scratch race which is 80 laps (20km) round the velodrome and after a cagey race Sam managed to sneak off the front with three kilometres to go and rode solo to take the gold medal.

Sam’s final race of the weekend was a point race, where every 10 laps there is a sprint for point and the rider with the most points at the ends wins. Sam had the most points all the way through right up until the last sprint where he was pipped to the line, narrowly missing out on a second Scottish title.

Sam said: “I’m super pleased to win my first Scottish championship, after only seven months racing on the track. I came into this weekend with low expectations but I’ve felt really strong racing over the weekend.”

Sam would like to thank Stewartry Sports Council for their ongoing support.
