Devils Should Trade For Intriguing Blackhawks Forward

The New Jersey Devils are one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference right now, as they have a solid 24-15-3 record and are second in the Metropolitan Division. With this, they are expected to be buyers at the deadline this year.

The Chicago Blackhawks, on the other hand, are in a completely different position. At this point of the season, they sport a 13-25-2 record and are at the bottom of the NHL standings. Thus, they are very likely to be sellers.

With the Devils’ bottom six needing a boost, one Blackhawks trade candidate who should grab their attention is forward Craig Smith.

Smith, 35, is a Blackhawk who has the potential to be dealt by the deadline. This is because he is a pending UFA with an affordable $1 million cap hit and plenty of post-season experience. In addition, he is doing pretty well in a depth role with the rebuilding Blackhawks this season, posting six goals and 11 points in 28 games.

If the Devils acquired Smith, he would give them another solid option for their fourth line or could even work well as an extra forward. In addition, due to his solid two-way play, he can kill penalties.

Nevertheless, with the Devils needing help in their bottom six, Smith could be a solid, low-risk player to bring in.
