Diabetes Scotland launches their Diabetes Tech Can’t Wait campaign report – Health and Social Care Alliance Scotland

Find out more about how the report is aiding Diabetes Scotland’s campaign for fair and equal access to diabetes technology across Scotland.

On World Diabetes Day (November 14th), Diabetes Scotland launched their Diabetes Tech Can’t Wait campaign report at the Scottish Parliament. Over 100 people attended the launch and the event was an important milestone in their campaign.

The report discusses knowledge which has been learnt from the campaign and includes insights from people who have accessed or tried to access diabetes technology. It also highlights instances of good practice in the NHS and innovative approaches to prescribing technology.

The report also makes recommendations that the Scottish Government and health services could follow to aid a fairer and faster rollout of diabetes technology across Scotland.

The main demands made by Diabetes Scotland are for:

  • National targets to be set to drive forward progress, aiming for 100% of children and 70% of adults with type 1 diabetes to be using hybrid closed technology by 2030
  • Sustained, ringfenced funding to be guaranteed to meet the demand for diabetes technology and cover ongoing costs
  • National training to upskill diabetes clinicians in diabetes technology
  • Ensure that prescribing guidelines are applied consistently, and that people aren’t denied tech because they are managing their diabetes “too well” or “not well enough”

Speakers at the launch included Emma Harper MSP, John Kinnear (National Director at Diabetes Scotland), Kirsty French (The Tech Collective), Paul O’Kane MSP (Co-Convener of the Cross-Party Group on Diabetes), and Jenni Minto (Minister for Public Health and Women’s Health).
