Ex-Red Wings Goalie Hits Big Rough Patch
Bad luck comes for us all.
The Detroit Red Wings have experienced that to different degrees this season. After taking a few hits to the chin to start the 2024-25 season, things are starting to look up.
The same cannot be said for one former Red Wings player.
James Reimer has had a rough go this season. He started the year with the Buffalo Sabres, was put on waivers, plucked off of waivers by the Anaheim Ducks, played a couple of games, and then put on waivers again.
And the Sabres grabbed him again.
His short stint with the Ducks was brutal. He had a 4.50 goals against average (GAA) in two games and a .864 save percentage (SV%).
Ouch.
Things have improved in Buffalo, but they are certainly less than ideal for the 36-year-old veteran. He hasn’t started a game since December 21st.
To put salt on the wound, he has had a sub-900 save percentage in his last three starts. Lately, Reimer’s best performances have come when he has stepped in to replace the starter, specifically against the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montreal Canadiens.
This year, he had a single win in eight games. Reimer adds to his record with a 3.04 GAA and a .888 SV%.
Last year was the only season he spent with the Red Wings. In 25 games played, he sported a record of 11-8-2. Additionally, Reimer had a 3.11 GAA and a .904 SV%.
At 36-years-old, this rough patch could signal that he is near the end of his NHL playing career. There is nothing wrong with calling it once his current contract expires at the end of the season.
Bad luck or a multi-year slump with a resurgence around the corner? The jury is out on that one.
