Ex-Sabres Captain Provides Playing Future Update

Before the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline passed, the Buffalo Sabres traded then-captain Kyle Okposo to the Florida Panthers in exchange for defenseman Calle Sjalin and a 2024 fifth-round pick. This move gave Okposo the opportunity to play for a contender, and he, of course, got to lift the Stanley Cup last month.

Now, roughly one month into free agency, Okposo remains a free agent. When noting that he said back in May that he had not determined if the 2023-24 season would be his final season, many have naturally wondered about his playing future. While speaking with NHL.com’s Dan Rosen, he provided an update on where his mind is at on the matter.

The 2006 seventh-overall pick shared that he is still unsure whether or not he will continue his NHL career.

If Okposo decides to continue his career, there should be a club willing to sign him to a cheap one-year deal. His immense experience and leadership would make him a solid addition to teams looking for bottom-six help.

In 67 games this past season split between the Sabres and Panthers, Okposo recorded 12 goals, 22 points, 75 hits, and a plus-1 rating.

It will be interesting to see if Okposo opts to continue his career or hang up the skates. If he does retire, ending his career with a Stanley Cup would be a nice way to go out.
