Ex-Scotland star played into studio by bagpipes for punditry duty on live TV

SCOTLAND’S appearance on the big stage at Euro 2024 has certainly captured the imagination.

And one former international defender has REALLY been getting into the spirit of things on live TV.

Steve Clarke‘s men got their Euros campaign underway in Germany on Friday night.

As we all know, it turned into a bit of a disaster with the Scots being thumped 5-1 by the hosts in Munich.

But while the result dampened spirits, it certainly won’t bring an end to the party atmosphere the Tartan Army have taken with them to Germany and showcasing back home.

It is, after all, our first major tournament on foreign soil for 26 years.

Despite the thumping defeat, things are far from over.

Scotland take on Switzerland on Wednesday before facing Hungary in their final Group A match next Sunday.

So the feel good atmosphere is sure to continue right until the very end – whenever that may be for the Tartan Army!

And one former Scotland international has been spotted getting right into the spirit of things.

While Ally McCoist and Graeme Souness are leading the Scots TV punditry game for our own broadcasters, Steven Caldwell is covering things much further from home!

The 43-year old won 12 caps for Scotland during an international career spanning a decade between 2001 and 2011.

Caldwell, brother of fellow ex-Scotland ace Gary, enjoyed a long career at the top level of English football, turning out for Newcastle, Sunderland and Burnley among others.

After a two-year spell with Birmingham, Caldwell headed across the Atlantic to join Toronto FC in 2013.

And even after retiring from football in 2015, he remains in Canada to this day.

He’s been a coach with the Canada national team but is also a prominent TV pundit with leading sports network TSN.

Caldwell is one of the station’s leading pundits for their coverage of the Euros, alongside former Everton star Kevin Kilbane.

And he certainly made a BIG entrance as he arrived to cover Scotland’s opener with Germany.

As the studio host and Kilbane chatted, bagpipes could be heard playing.

The camera then cut to the studio entrance, where a piper in full national dress entered.

Behind him was none other than Caldwell who was himself decked head to toe in full Scottish attire!

Wearing a kilt and sporran, smiling Caldwell was piped into the studio as the host joked he was looking in a “far too confident” mood.

As it turned out, that was the case.
