Five things to do in Scotland this week: from The Who to a Celtic music festival

1. The Who

Imagine if Keith Moon was your godfather. Actually, imagine choosing him to be godfather to your own child. That’s what Ringo Starr did, and if you come to see the Who play their first Edinburgh gig in 40 years, you’ll find out what kind of drumming talents Zak Starkey has inherited. Up front, as usual, will be Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend, with the latter’s little brother Simon on guitar, mandolin and backing vocals. Oh, and there’s a full orchestra too, as the legendary mod-rockers’ The Who Hits Back! tour is promoting their new album, The Who with Orchestra Live at Wembley. You can bet your Vespa there’ll be some distinctive haircuts and target motifs in the audience. The band will be supported by UB40, featuring Ali Campbell.

Zelda Smyth wears a Gareth Pugh dress hand-embroidered with black plastic drinking straws as part of Beyond the Little Black Dress

2. Beyond the Little Black Dress

A lot of us reach for a black garment without thinking why, but there’s so much more to this colour than convenience and versatility. It can express everything from piety to perversion, rebellion to respect, and it’s the go-to hue for subcultures that our grandparents would never have heard of. This exhibition deconstructs the little black dress, and displays more than 60 looks from collections and designers around the world, among them Yves Saint Laurent, Dior and Jean Muir. You can also see a specially commissioned dress made by the fashion designers and climate activists Vin + Omi, incorporating horsehair and nettles from Highgrove. I’m not going to lie: that sounds itchy. What are you going to wear?

3. HebCelt

This Celtic-inspired music festival occupies a dreamy location by the water on Lews Castle Green in Stornoway. The festival kicks off on Wednesday with a line-up that includes FARA, a folk quartet from Orkney who’ve adapted Orcadian poems for their album, Energy Islands. Or if you’re in the mood to jump around, you might prefer to catch the party band Skerryvore. The Proclaimers, Peat & Diesel, Talisk, Project Smok and the Kinnaris Quintet are also performing. Look out for a parallel programme at An Lanntair too, with highlights such as Hebridean Women, which celebrates traditional Gaelic song under the theme of emigration.
