Former Canucks Around The World: Anton Rödin

Plenty of former Vancouver Canucks have carved out successful careers around the world after leaving the organization. Whether playing for some of the best teams in Europe or excelling in non-traditional hockey markets, these one-time Canucks continue to apply their trade outside of North America. Today, we look at Anton Rödin, who spent the 2023-24 season with Brynäs IF in the  HockeyAllsvenskan.

There was plenty of hype surrounding Rödin during his time with Vancouver. Initially selected in the second round of the 2009 draft, Rödin made his debut with the Canucks on December 23, 2016, playing three games for Vancouver during the 2016-17 season. Unfortunately, the former SHL MVP wasn’t able to stick at the NHL level, leaving North America for good during the 2017-18 campaign.

After a season and a half in the NL, Rödin returned home to Sweden, signing with Brynäs IF in 2019. Brynäs IF was the organization Rödin was playing for when he won SHL MVP in 2016, so this was a homecoming for him. In his first season back, Rödin led Brynäs IF with 46 points, which also ranked fourth across the entire SHL.

Rödin has stayed at Brynäs IF for the last five seasons. The team was relegated to the HockeyAllsvenskan at the end of the 2022-23 season but won the Championship last season and were promoted back to the SHL for the upcoming season. Rödin played a significant role in helping Brynäs IF back to the SHL, finishing the regular season with 43 points while adding 11 points in 13 games during the postseason.

Now 33, Rödin is set to achieve some special milestones next season. He is four games away from his 400th in the SHL, while he is just 20 points away from the 300 mark. While it may not have worked out in the NHL, Rödin has had a very impressive career, becoming one of the most successful players in Brynäs IF’s history.
