Former Oilers Goalie Takes Indefinite Leave

EDMONTON — It’s the time of change.

The Edmonton Oilers have experienced a fair amount of change this off-season. A new GM in Stan Bowman, a few new faces on the team in Jeff Skinner and Ty Emberson, as well as a new contract for one Leon Draisaitl.

Change is also happening outside of the Oilers bubble. One big change was the Detroit Red Wings offering a contract to former Oilers goalie Jack Campbell after he was bought out.

Another layer to the story has surfaced.

Earlier today, the NHL and NHLPA jointly announced that current Red Wings goaltender Jack Campbell “will be unavailable to his Club for an indefinite period while he receives care from the player assistance program of the NHL and NHLPA.”

It’s good to see that Campbell recognizes that he needs help and is taking big steps to get that help. Hopefully, he will find the help he needs to be a healthy and whole person.

Campbell struggled last year with the Oilers. In five games, he had a 1-4-1 record, a 4.50 goals against average (GAA), and a .873 save percentage (SV%).

He found a measure of success in the AHL. Campbell played 33 games for the Bakersfield Condors. In those games, he had a 18-13-1 record, a 2.63 GAA, and a .918 SV%.

On July 1st, he signed a one-year $775,000 deal with the Red Wings. I wish Campbell all the best.
