Free Church of Scotland apologises for slavery links

The Free Church of Scotland has apologised for the “historical sins” of its members in relation to the slave trade.

In a statement, the church said it was “firmly opposed to all forms of racism and slavery”. Responding directly to allegations that it accepted donations from US plantation owners in the 1840s the Free Church said it “regretted” those interactions.

The anti-slavery campaigner Frederick Douglass famously demanded that the Free Church of Scotland should “send back the money” during a tour of Scotland in 1846. “The Free Church recognises and freely admits the historical sins of members of the denomination in relation to slavery,” the statement read.

The church was said to have received an £18,000 bequest — equivalent to £1.9million today — from a slave plantation owner in 1853
