Germany vs Scotland picks and predictions

My best bet:
Germany -1 (-125 at Betano)

My analysis
Scotland did brilliantly to reach Euro 2024, qualifying ahead of Norway to seal a spot at this summer’s competition. They must have been disappointed to get rewarded by a truly tough opening game, facing the hosts in front of a sold-out home crowd at Allianz Arena. The Tartan Army will do their very best to cheer their team to a result, but it’s going to be hard for them to break down one of the tournament’s better teams in Germany.

It’s been nearly nine years since the teams last met, a game which Germany won. Scotland has won just four of the 17 meetings they’ve had throughout history. Sadly, that trend is unlikely to change here and we should see Germany, pushed forward by their home crowd, win by multiple goals.

Scott McTominay led Scotland’s goalscoring in qualifying, which in many ways is their biggest problem. Scoring seven goals was an incredible return, but it’s not one which he can be expected to continue. With Lyndon Dykes injured and Steve Clarke refusing to call up Plymouth Argyle’s Ryan Hardie, it leaves limited striking options. Che Adams will get the start but with just six goals in 30 games, it seems unlikely he can fire Scotland to a win here.

That’s in stark contrast to Germany. They may not have a world-class striker but Niclas Fullkrug is more than capable should he start. Likewise, Kai Havertz, has the movement and understanding of space to link up excellently with Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz, who are expected to be deployed behind the frontman.

Home advantage and a more talented roster should be enough to get Germany a relatively straightforward win here, and with the likes of Leroy Sane starting from the bench, they should have the players to change the game if Scotland can hold them off early.

Take Germany -1 on the spread, as they have better options in every area of the field. They have pace and guile in attack, as well as a superior defense and one which should be able to keep Scotland’s blunt attack at bay.

Florian Wirtz odds, prop for today

My best bet:
Florian Wirtz to outscore opposition (+350 at Betano)

My analysis:

He may have gone the season unbeaten at domestic level and developed into one of the very best players on the planet, but Florian Wirtz isn’t quite yet a global superstar. However, that should change after this tournament with the 21-year-old set to be a key part of Germany’s Euro 2024 campaign.

He’s only scored once in his 18 international appearances, but he’s just now grown into a starter for his country and Julian Nagelsmann has built this team around him and Jamal Musiala.

Wirtz has 14 goals this season for Bayer Leverkusen in domestic play (between the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal), as well as another four in European competitions, so we know that his goalscoring is at a high level now.

This will be a tough game for Scotland, who should struggle against a team of this class and lacks threats in front of goal, so a solitary Wirtz marker might be enough to outscore the opposition here.

Germany vs Scotland same-game parlay (SGP)

Germany -1

First half result — Draw

Under 3.5

In addition to our best bet, we’re also going to back the score to be level at halftime. We’ve seen in qualifying that both squads are often more conservative early in games. The scores were level at halftime in three of their four games against Spain and Norway before those opened up in the second half. That’s a trend we should expect to continue here.

If there’s a low-scoring first half, it stands to reason that we’ll see Under 3.5 goals in the whole game. We know that Scotland will try and keep scores tight to start and there’s also a high chance that Germany might take some time to get going when you consider the pressure that they’re under.
