Hello Kitty’s New Limited-Edition Tartan Collection Celebrates Scottish Culture

Sanrio itself describes the new collection: “For Hello Kitty’s epic 50th anniversary, the celebration continues with a limited-edition tartan print in collaboration with Lochcarron of Scotland, officially registered with The Scottish Register of Tartans. A blend of hand-picked colors and unique weaves tells the story of one of Sanrio’s beloved characters — Hello Kitty. After all, one can never have too many friends! This dress tartan celebrates Hello Kitty. The tartan’s color palette is intended to be a representation of Hello Kitty’s persona and wardrobe: white is for her face; yellow for her nose; pink for her ribbon and blue for her clothing.”

A tartan is defined in the Scottish Register of Tartans Act (2008) as a “design which is capable of being woven consisting of two or more alternating colored stripes which combine vertically and horizontally to form a repeated chequered pattern.” The design typically comprises “two or more different solid-colored stripes. These can be of similar, but are usually of differing, proportions that repeat in a defined sequence.” While these designs can correspond to a family clan name in Scottish culture, everyone is encouraged to wear any design. Sanrio collaborated with The Lochcarron of Scotland on the new collection, which describes itself as the world-leading online retailer and manufacturer of Scottish tartan.
