Inside Scotland’s ‘new NC500’ route that’s every bit as great as iconic roadtrip

A UNIQUE road trip is being hailed as “the new North Coast 500”.

The iconic 516-mile route, dubbed Scotland’s Route 66, has become one of the most popular destinations in the country.

But the area has been plagued by problem tourists since it was first marketed.

Now holidaymakers are instead embarking on The North East 250, which takes motorists on a journey through the Cairngorms, Aberdeenshire, and Speyside.

The route, launched in 2017, promises a number of experiences along the way, including whisky distilleries, spectacular mountain passes, famous castles, rugged North Sea coastline and picturesque seaside villages.

The smaller route was even named one of the top 500 unmissable global travel experiences by Lonely Planet.

The Attractions

The North East 250 runs in a loop, from Glenshee in the Cairngorms National Park, but you can start and end the route at any point.

Those looking to explore the area’s heritage can stop by Elgin Cathedral, Huntly Castle, Balmoral Castle, Peterhead Prison Museum, and Slains Castle.

Explorers doing the route can’t skip Bow Fiddle Rock, an incredible natural formation just off the coast at Portknockie, Moray.

Meanwhile thrill-seekers can enjoy a range of activities along the way including gorge walking, kayaking, and canoeing trips in Grantown on Spey.

For travellers seeking arts and culture, The Museum of Scottish Lighthouses, The Salmon Bothy Museum, Moray Motor Museum and Fraserburgh Heritage Centre are worth a visit.

Food and drink highlights include the Whisky Food Safari, Portsoy Ice Cream and the Walkers Shortbread Factory Shop Aberlour.

When to visit

Motorists are advised to avoid doing the route during winter, as some roads may be closed due to heavy snowfall.

For those wanting to experience the best of the country, early April to late September may be the best time to aim for.

How long does it take?

The suggested length of the NE250 varies, with the shortest time being three days and the longest being five to seven.

The best duration has been suggested as three to four days, depending on how long you want to spend at each attraction.
