‘Is That It?’: Connor McDavid Plays Comedian With The Media During Scrum

EDMONTON — “It’s all positive stuff.”

When everything is going well, what do journalists have to write about? This is the conundrum facing the media that covers the Edmonton Oilers at this point in time.

With a 15-10-2 record, the Oilers are in the first of two Western Conference Wild Card Positions. A recent stretch of five wins in six games and six in the last eight games has put them in a favorable position.

With everything rolling along well, there isn’t an “easy” story to write about that readers will find interesting. Sometimes, that means we must dig in and approach the same topic from different angles.

This is what happened during Connor McDavid’s scrum after yesterday’s practice. The questions started off asking about what is going right for the Oilers

“We like how we are playing,” McDavid revealed. “(We are) finding some ways to score goals is big, (we are) solid defensively. I thought special teams are starting to go, goalies are making saves.”

The Oilers are experiencing a positive current. However, tonight, they face a formidable opponent in the Tampa Bay Lightning.

“It’s a great challenge for us,” McDavid said. “We don’t look too far ahead. Tampa is a great team, they are going to take all of our attention. (We’ve) gotta be ready for that first and foremost.”

“Nice stretch of games here before Christmas to see where we are at.”

Tonight’s game is a great litmus test for the Oilers. Even with Steven Stamkos’s departure, facing the Lightning isn’t easy.

The questioning to this point has all been related to facing the Lightning at this moment and what that means for the team. McDavid noticed this pattern and addressed it in the middle of the next question.

“It will be a great test for us to see where we are at,” McDavid responds after a lengthy pause, his scramble to find the right words to say clearly evident on his face.

“I feel like all of the questions have been the same today,” McDavid conjures a laugh from everyone in the locker room and reveals a smile of his own. “We’re playing pretty well, and we’re playing some good teams this week, and it will be a good test.”

He looks around the room.

“Is that it?” McDavid questions with a smile on his face.

It’s great to see this flash of personality. McDavid has always had this kind of humor. This is the kind of positive stuff that is enjoyable to write about.
