Itv hammered as Scotland build up ditched for England
ITV has come under attack for snubbing Scotland during the build-up to Germany versus our heroes – which instead focused on England.
Germany and Scotland were supposed to be the main event as Euro 2024 kicks off in style in Munich tonight. But ITV – who are first up on the broadcast rotation – decided to talk Three Lions. Abd while there was a bit of chat on the game that’s actually taking place tonight – including a heartfelt tribute from Graeme Souness to his good pal Alan Hansen – less than 20 minutes into the programme there was the inevitable pivot to England.
Our neighbours don’t play until Sunday night, but a pre-recorded interview with boss Gareth Southgate apparently just couldn’t wait. The it was into the debate over whether it’s now or never for England as tournament favourites. Ian Wright and Roy Keane were asked if England have underachieved in tournaments gone by, then Souness’ take on how they should approach things and if they can beat France.
And while it’s a UK-wide broadcast, it’s understandable that Scottish fans are up in arms at the readiness to ignore the opening game to talk all things Three Lions. And punters have been making their feelings known.
One posted on X: “Turned ITV on and its coverage of England. Is it not Scotland Germany?” Another added: “12 minutes into the Euros coverage if Scotland vs Germany on STV (provided by ITV across the U.K.) and already the focus is on England and Gareth Southgate. What an absolute joke!!!”
And it’s caused some to get pretty angry. One fan posted: “Is STV at the wind up? Build up to the Scotland game and they’re previewing England. Get yourselves to f***!! Shambles.”
And it’s a tried old tale for others, with another fed up fan saying: “Always good to see the Scotland match build-up focus on “yeah, but what are England’s chances…”
